In South Carolina, Trump’s chosen governor has an elaborate plan to suppress voters

In South Carolina, Trump’s chosen governor has an elaborate plan to suppress voters

In the crucial battleground state of South Carolina, President Donald Trump endorsed Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette in a crowded GOP primary race for governor on Friday.

Among that crowd are a U.S. House representative who called for military intervention and martial law to keep Joe Biden from the White House, a U.S. House representative who called herself “Trump in high heels,” and an attorney general who helped file a lawsuit to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

But for Evette, none of these efforts went far enough. Not only that, but his campaign platform involves perhaps the most elaborate plan yet in terms of voting restrictions and suppressing all other candidates.

Trump’s support for Evette, in a state where Republicans recently abandoned plans to help him win another congressional seat, reflects his tendency to side with those most loyal to his agenda of endangering voting rights.

A key feature of Evette’s campaign has been her attacks on fellow primary challengers who she says did not sufficiently support efforts to unseat Trump in the 2020 election.

In fact, on the day of Trump’s endorsement, she posted an AI-edited social media video criticizing fellow US gubernatorial candidate Nancy Mace (right) – the self-proclaimed “Trump in High Heels” – for “supporting Democratic efforts to elect Joe Biden.”

Hey Nancy, maybe you shouldn’t have stabbed the president so many times for your own gain. https://t.co/SAmEF6lAbS pic.twitter.com/OgHw3lWJNW

The ad closely resembled one of Evette’s previous campaign videos, also AI-edited, in which she attacked state Attorney General Alan Wilson (R) for “confirming Biden’s election” and “betraying Trump.”

A poll taken between May 21 and 24 showed Evette holding a slight advantage over Wilson, 19.9% to 19.4%, and over a third candidate, business executive Rom Reddy, who polled at 19%. Mace comes in 14.6% behind U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman (R), the congressman who sent the ill-fated text message in January 2021 calling for martial law.

It remains to be seen how much impact Trump’s support will have on Evette’s candidacy in the days leading up to the June 9 state primary. But what voters can see is that she has a very detailed plan to weaken voting rights if she is elected governor.

In this plan, Evette wants to strengthen South Carolina’s voter ID policy by removing the “reasonable impediment” provision, which allows people without photo ID to sign an affidavit and vote by provisional ballot. She also hopes to impose a requirement for documented proof of citizenship during the registration process.

It plans to improve purge methods by requiring state courts to provide jury information to election officials to verify voter data, and requiring the state to “pilot the use of commercial data sources to conduct roll maintenance.”

Evette also wants to use the Department of Homeland Security’s SAVE database and exchange voter data with other states, both of which are known for falsely flagging voters as ineligible to vote.

The plan includes a proposal to create an “election integrity unit” within South Carolina’s law enforcement division to monitor and investigate allegations of voter fraud — although findings of voter fraud are extremely rare.

None of the other major gubernatorial candidates’ campaign sites share plans as detailed as Evette’s on the election, and most don’t even mention the issue.

Reddy’s policy platform says he supports proof of citizenship for voter registration and calls for a physical signature included on every ballot cast in person.

Wilson’s campaign page provides an indirect statement about “standing with President Trump” that refers to his assistance in Trump’s 2020 election overturn agenda.

“[Wilson is] the only candidate who stood with Trump through staged witch hunts, mock impeachments, and political prosecutions,” his campaign site reads. “Democrats even tried to strip him of his law license for supporting Trump after the 2020 election. As governor, he will continue to fight alongside the president.

Despite Wilson signing a brief in support of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s scandalous lawsuit seeking to overturn the 2020 election results, he had to defend himself in this year’s race against Evette’s attacks.

Although he was nearly disbarred for contributing to that 2020 lawsuit, it still wasn’t enough to win Trump’s endorsement — perhaps because, as Evette pointed out, Wilson ultimately admitted that Biden was the valid winner of the election.

This snub reinforced the idea that only complete rejection of the 2020 election results counts as valid in Trump’s political universe.
