Indian Prime Minister Modi speaks with Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing; discusses trade and border management
NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (June 1) met Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi and held wide-ranging talks focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, defense and border security.
Aung Hlaing’s five-day visit to India comes less than two months after he became Myanmar’s president following high-stakes parliamentary elections. Elections in the Southeast Asian country took place in December and January after years of protests against the ruling military junta that seized power in a coup on Feb. 1, 2021, and toppled the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

In another message, the MEA spokesperson added, “Prime Minister @narendramodi held in-depth discussions with President U Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar on deepening bilateral relations between India and Myanmar. Rooted in the enduring historical and human relationship, both sides agreed to advance the 🇮🇳-🇲🇲 partnership for peace, progress and prosperity and collaborate further in the areas of trade, investment, connectivity, development partnership, capacity building, security and border management.
He said Prime Minister Modi conveyed to President Aung Hlaing that India remained “a trusted neighbor of Myanmar, a reliable partner and an steadfast first responder in times of crisis, in line with India’s Neighborhood First, Action East and MAHASAGAR policies”.
“The Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting peace and dialogue in Myanmar, including by sharing its experiences in federal governance and economic growth,” he added.

Being one of India’s strategic neighbors, Myanmar shares a 1,640 km-long border with several northeastern states, including Nagaland and Manipur.
Aung Hlaing is expected to visit Mumbai on June 2 for trade and industry interactions.
