PTI condemns ‘serious violations’ of electoral process in Britain-Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The embattled Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) on Tuesday leveled serious allegations of electoral malpractice in Gilgit-Baltistan, drawing comparisons to rigging in the February 8, 2024 general elections.

PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram condemned what he described as “blatant fraud and serious violations of the electoral process” in the region.

He claimed that party leaders, including PTI general secretary Salman Akram Raja, were barred from entering Gilgit-Baltistan and turned away by authorities, echoing tactics used against PTI leaders ahead of the 2024 national elections.

He said police officers would be stationed with lists of individuals affiliated with the PTI, identifying them and preventing them from entering the area based on names and photographs.

He called it a “blatant violation of the constitution and democratic principles.”

Further, he alleged that a systematic campaign of administrative hurdles is being carried out under the pretext of issuing No Objection Certificates (NOCs), reflecting the restrictions that the PTI faced in 2024.

He said PTI candidates and leaders are deliberately denied access to the NOC, restricting their election campaign activities, including public rallies, processions and corner meetings.

“The government apparatus is working on a specific agenda,” he added, suggesting that the administrative measures are aimed at rigging elections and manipulating votes.

Akram claimed that in constituencies where PTI candidates are strong, pressure is being put on independent candidates to support government-backed parties, raising “serious questions about the transparency of the electoral process”.

He said he was deeply concerned about ongoing attempts to manipulate the results in a manner similar to what he described as the “brazen overnight theft of public office” in the 2024 elections, when results were allegedly delayed, Form 45s ignored and mandates changed in favor of certain parties.

Responding to a recent statement by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari regarding Form 47, Akram said the remark represented “a clear admission of pre-election rigging” by the PPP and its allies.

He further said that PTI candidates are openly threatened with treatment similar to what Imran Khan is facing, which he termed as the “worst example of fascism” rather than democratic politics.

He accused the government parties, particularly the PML-N and the PPP, of enjoying full state patronage, with facilities and protocol provided for their meetings, while the activities of the PTI are systematically hampered.

The PTI demanded that all political parties be given equal electoral opportunities, that discriminatory practices against NOCs cease immediately, that its leaders and workers be allowed to move freely and campaign, and that the Election Commission upholds its constitutional responsibility to ensure transparent elections.

Akram warned that continued undemocratic behavior would undermine the credibility of elections in Gilgit-Baltistan and place full responsibility on the current leadership. He reaffirmed PTI’s commitment to upholding public office at all levels.
