Law enforcement officials prepare for President Trump’s visit, discuss security and costs

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU) – It’s a big week here in western Wisconsin, especially for law enforcement.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office and neighboring agencies are preparing for a presidential visit and the start of an outdoor music festival.

President Trump is expected to visit Custer Farm in Chippewa Falls on Friday, as thousands also travel to the area for the Force Fields music festival.

“We certainly rely very heavily on our neighboring agencies to assist us with mutual aid during these events,” Chippewa County Sheriff Travis Hakes said.

It’s at times like these, Hakes said, that surrounding law enforcement comes together to support each other.

“Very rarely are we told no when we ask for help,” Hakes said. “Usually when we ask for help, we receive an overwhelming amount, so it’s always very positive to have that type of networked relationship with neighboring law enforcement agencies.”

This support is accompanied by various logistics. During a highly publicized visit, Hakes said law enforcement must consider traffic flow, travel routes and site security, among other factors. However, Hakes expressed confidence in the agency’s ability to provide coverage.

“I believe we will be able to adequately staff all events to ensure that everyone here, from the president to festival-goers, is safe,” Sheriff Hakes said.

But public safety also has a cost. The City of Eau Claire has a partnership with event venues for large events. These sites add public safety fees to the bill they incur for a campaign. For the summer 2024 Harris-Walz rally, the city received a $16,000 reimbursement for public safety expenses.

But this policy is not the same everywhere.

“The stress on staff and the budget is definitely something I don’t look forward to, but it’s always nice to be able to help and make sure these people have a safe time when they come here,” Hakes said.

We asked about Chippewa County’s policies regarding funding for staff to conduct these visits. Chippewa County Administrator Andy Albarado sent the following statement.

“Right now, the county is focused on planning the visit and ensuring it goes smoothly and is safe and secure. The time and costs involved are still a variable figure as more details are determined. In addition to Chippewa County resources, a number of other agencies will provide support. If there is an opportunity to recoup costs associated with the visit, we certainly will.”

Sheriff Hakes shared a similar sentiment about working to get payment from these agencies.

“At the end of the day, I will do everything I can to try to get our office reimbursed, because even though the president is coming here to network and connect with the taxpayers and the citizens, I don’t think the taxpayers and the citizens should have to pay for that,” Hakes said.
