KP Information Minister demands unrestricted medical access for Imran Khan

Peshawar: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Shafi Jan on Friday demanded that former Prime Minister Imran Khan be given access to his personal doctors, legal team and family members, expressing concern over the PTI founder’s health and detention conditions.

Addressing a press conference alongside provincial Health Minister Khaleequr Rehman and representatives of the Insaf Doctors Forum (IDF), Shafi Jan claimed that Imran Khan remained incarcerated in several cases for over 1,000 days and had spent the last seven months in solitary confinement.

He described Khan as the country’s most popular political leader and said restrictions on his access to his family members and personal doctors were unjustified.

The minister further alleged that Imran Khan was recently taken to the hospital for treatment related to an eye disease without prior consultation or notification to his family members and personal doctors. According to Shafi Jan, this decision was not in accordance with the procedures outlined in the prison regulations.

He said Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had exhausted all constitutional and legal avenues over concerns over Khan’s health and his access to meetings, and accused federal ministers of issuing contradictory statements on the former prime minister’s medical treatment and hospital visits.

Referring to PTI leader Bushra Bibi, Shafi Jan also claimed that a medical procedure involving his eye treatment was carried out without informing his family members or personal doctors.

The minister argued that under the relevant prison regulations, Imran Khan was entitled to Class B facilities, but alleged that these had not been provided.

Calling for what he described as the protection of Khan’s human rights, Shafi Jan urged authorities to ensure access to appropriate medical care under the supervision of doctors of his choice, as well as regular meetings with family members and legal counsel.

He said the PTI supported the demands raised by Khan’s family regarding his healthcare and prison conditions, adding that the party believed in pursuing its goals through constitutional and democratic means rather than “vengeance politics”.

Responding to questions from journalists, Shafi Jan also criticized the federal government’s handling of economic affairs, inflation, energy shortages and wheat supply problems affecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He accused the federal administration of adopting discriminatory policies against the province whenever the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz held power at the Centre, and said Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur had consistently expressed concerns over the financial and administrative rights of the province.

The minister reiterated that the provincial government would continue to defend what he described as a fair share of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s resources while pursuing measures to address public concerns and protect provincial interests.
