A legal challenge claims the US president failed to seek proper approval for the fights to take place on his 80th birthday.

A lawsuit seeks to block US President Donald Trump from hosting an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) match at the White House.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of two Virginia residents, is the first known legal challenge to the mixed martial arts event, which is scheduled to take place June 14.

The event will take place on Trump’s 80th birthday. It is also linked to the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which the United States will commemorate on July 4 this year.

The legal challenge filed Saturday argued that Trump did not receive proper authorization to stage the fight.

He argued that the event violated U.S. National Park Service regulations prohibiting sporting events in federal parks, that Congress had not consented to the construction of a towering arch overlooking the event space, and that no environmental study had been conducted before construction.

“This is fundamentally a private, commercial, corrupt use of our most sacred national monuments for private gain,” said Brendan Ballou, the plaintiffs’ attorney. “And that’s what motivates this lawsuit.”

In a statement to the Associated Press, the White House dismissed the lawsuit as “obstructive, meritless and dilatory.”

The White House maintained that the UFC fight was “no different from the various other events hosted by the White House on the South Lawn and has properly authorized events on the Ellipse and National Mall throughout the year.”

Crews erected an octagon-shaped fighting cage on the South Lawn of the White House, with Trump saying the project would include a “5,000-seat arena right outside the front gate of the White House.”

Participation in the fight will be by invitation only and will be closely monitored. The Military Times news site reported earlier this week that the 1,200 service members receiving tickets to the event had to meet certain waist-to-height ratio standards.

Public viewing areas will also be provided at the nearby Ellipse.

Trump has long been closely involved with professional wrestling and the UFC, with his casinos and event spaces hosting past events.

He regularly appeared as a version of himself at World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) events throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. His current Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, is a co-founder of WWE.

Trump recently embraced the UFC, which is currently owned by the same company, TKO Group Holdings, as WWE.

UFC President Dana White is a close ally of Trump.

Political analysts credit Trump’s embrace of the sport with reaching out to disaffected male voters in the United States, particularly during his 2024 election campaign.
