ORLANDO, Fla. – A rare earthquake, centered off the coast of Cuba, was felt more than 400 miles away in central Florida.

Monday’s 6.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in an area that doesn’t normally experience many earthquakes.

In fact, this appears to be the strongest earthquake ever recorded in the Gulf region.

This is known as an intra-plate earthquake, which occurs on the plate itself rather than along a fault line. These are less common and typically occur in fault systems associated with episodes of tectonic development according to the United States Geological Survey.

The type of earthquake that occurred Monday was likely the result of a reverse fault.
