My relationship with PM Narendra Modi will not end because of a Rajya Sabha seat: HD Deve Gowda

Stating that he had not requested the BJP to nominate him to the Rajya Sabha, former Prime Minister HD Delegowda, whose political career in civil service ends with the end of his tenure in the Rajya Sabha on June 25, said his relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not linked to his nomination.

“I have developed a close relationship with Mr. Modi since 2014, even though (Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister) Chandrababu Naidu and I had expressed our feelings strongly against Mr. Modi on the Godhra issue when he was the Gujarat chief minister. My relationship with the Prime Minister will not end because of a Rajya Sabha seat,” said the nonagenarian leader who has been in active politics for over six decades.

“I can meet him or write to him on issues concerning the state. I have justified and supported Mr. Modi’s leadership and stood with him to see the overall development of the country. I had told Mr. Kumaraswamy to accompany Mr. Modi,” he said at a press conference in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

The statement by the veteran leader and founder of Janata Dal (Secular), which is the BJP’s ally in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), comes after Congress leaders attacked the BJP for refusing re-nomination, and said it was a “humiliation and insult” to the JD(S) supremo.

The Congress also sought to point out that its current membership in the Rajya Sabha was due to the help of Sonia Gandhi and the Congress party. Asked about Congress’s comments, he said: “I am not interested in this issue and do not wish to comment further.” »

“If I was interested in contesting, I would have discussed the issue with the Prime Minister and Home Minister (Amit Shah) when I visited Delhi for a book release on May 26. I did not discuss it with anyone,” the former Prime Minister told reporters. “You (the media) gave me publicity by saying that my name was also being considered along with other names. Recalling his political career, the Vokkaliga leader said, “I am 93 years old. How long ago did I enter politics through my election to the Taluk Development Council in 1960? Before that, I was elected president of Anjaneya Cooperative Credit Society in 1954-55. How long should I stay in politics?”

Mr. Gowda said he welcomed the statement of his son and Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy when he said that with 18 members in the Legislative Assembly, they were not expecting nomination from the Rajya Sabha.

Future projects

Regarding his future plans, he said, “I will not rest. I will do everything possible to strengthen our party. We are part of the NDA and the JD(S) needs to be strengthened. I will go to party programs and visit the party office. Until that is possible, I will continue to work for the state and the country.”
