President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed on Saturday that Turkey’s national football team would feel the full weight of the nation’s support throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying Turkey was ready to write a new chapter in the country’s football history ahead of its Group D opener against Australia.

In a video message broadcast before Sunday’s match, Erdogan stressed that the team’s return to football’s biggest stage after 24 years had sparked national enthusiasm. “Now is the time to write a new legend, and we will write it together,” he said, referring to the country’s third place finish in the 2002 tournament. The president stressed that the 86 million citizens are rallying behind the players.

Turkey missed six consecutive editions of the World Cup after reaching the semi-finals in 2002, when the nation celebrated a historic third-place finish. Turkey last participated in the tournament co-hosted by Japan and South Korea and will now open their Group D campaign against Australia on Sunday.
