GB News critics want to limit free speech to metropolitan liberal elite, says former Ofcom chief

Critics of GB News are trying to limit free speech to the metropolitan liberal elite, a former Ofcom director has claimed.

Lord Michael Grade recently stepped down as chairman of Britain’s media watchdog and said he welcomed the arrival of the People’s Channel in the name of “plurality”.

In an interview with the Guardian, Lord Grade said a long-term lack of “the white majority as a voice in the debate” would harm social integration in the UK.

His conservative counterpart said: “The fact is, what people don’t like is the fact that there is a television channel that gives voice to a strong body of opinion in this country, which has been ignored for years.

“They just don’t like the idea of there being a different voice or news agenda to the Islington liberal consensus type.

Lord Grade was appointed to the role by Boris Johnson’s government in 2022.

Asked about Ofcom’s approach to regulating GB News, Lord Grade pointed to a recent interview with Tony Sewell, who oversaw a report on racial disparities carried out by Mr Johnson’s government.

He continued: “If you want integration, which we all do, and we want everyone to live happily ever after, regardless of their origin, race, religion or anything else, [Sewell] said we need to give the white majority a voice in this debate.

“I held on to that and thought, ‘This is so brilliant. This is why the Reform Party is doing well in the polls.’ Of course it’s true.

He went on to say that it was “certainly not true” that the voice of “the white majority” had been proportionately heard in recent times.

He also believed that the BBC had always been out of touch with the public.

He went on to say: “This is once again the argument of the London metropolitan elite.

“The BBC missed Thatcherism, when [Margaret] Thatcher happened… They were so buried in this traditional Westminster bubble of metropolitan elites.

“They couldn’t see it and they completely missed it.”

He reiterated that Ofcom’s rules require a certain impartiality, allowing a range of opinions across its programs, with the main problems coming from politicians broadcasting news bulletins.

Lord Grade said: “What these people don’t understand – these so-called defenders of free speech and freedom of expression, but they want to shut down a news channel – they want the regulator to have the power to say who can or cannot appear on these programmes.

“It’s for the birds. It should never allow this to happen.

“Just because it’s called GB News doesn’t mean all their programs are news.

“These are talk shows, political talks. We could talk about it forever, but we’re dancing on the head of a pin. It really doesn’t matter.

“The real problem is that… it’s not a politician who announces the news”

He concluded: “Impartiality is a state of grace that you aspire to. And as long as you aspire and appear to be trying to be impartial, that’s fine. One person’s impartiality is another person’s bias.”
