Sisters reject official version of Imran’s health – Journal

ISLAMABAD: Rejecting the government’s narrative on Imran Khan’s health condition, his sister Aleema Khan on Tuesday demanded that the incarcerated PTI founder be shifted to Shifa International Hospital, alleging that authorities were denying him proper medical treatment.

Speaking to reporters outside Adiala Prison during a sit-in organized by the former prime minister’s family and supporters, she said the government was not telling the truth about his health.

“The government is not telling the truth. It is not allowing Imran Khan’s treatment. We have repeatedly asked PTI leaders to join us and put pressure on the government to ensure his admission to Shifa International Hospital,” she said.

The government and the prison service should be held accountable, she said.

His sister, Noreen Niazi, also rejected official medical reports and accused the government and prison authorities of transferring him to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) for the fifth time, “without informing the family”.

Aleema Khan claimed that the government was afraid of Imran Khan and referred to one of his recent social media posts in which he warned that Pakistan was heading in the same direction as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

She said those who demanded their rights in Pakistan were often called traitors. Referring to the recent unrest in Bangladesh, she urged the government to learn lessons from developments in the region and handle the Kashmir issue cautiously, saying people continued to stand up for their rights.

While dismissing reports of behind-the-scenes negotiations involving the PTI, Noreen Niazi said, “This misinformation is being spread by the agencies. We cannot hold negotiations with those who stole the elections.”

The scale of the PTI demonstration in front of Adiala on Tuesday highlighted a gap between the party’s demands for mobilization and actual participation.

Aleema Khan said opposition leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai had indicated that the PTI could rally 10,000 supporters outside the prison if given enough time, and had proposed a protest window of 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., although the family suggested 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. to spare participants the worst of the heat of the day.

Still, she hopes more supporters will arrive, saying the sit-in would end at 7 p.m. anyway.

PTI North Punjab Senior Vice President Malik Yasir Patwali, however, described the rally as satisfactory and said the turnout was expected to increase further.

He told Dawn that the PTI’s North Punjab chapter was hosting the protest and a meeting chaired by regional president Malik Taimoor Masood had ordered each party ticket holder to bring at least 50 supporters. He said all the leaders who were scheduled to meet Mr Khan were present at the protest, but alleged that law enforcers initially stopped the workers from reaching the venue but only allowed them after some time.

Meanwhile, the PTI requested the prison superintendent to allow Gohar Ali Khan, Salman Akram Raja, Naeem Panjutha, Fateh Ullah Burki, Muhammad Dilpazir Butt and Masooma Mir to meet Mr Khan.
