IHC orders authorities to arrange legal access for Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in £190m case

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday ordered authorities to arrange meetings between former Prime Minister Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and their legal advisor within seven days to facilitate the preparation and filing of appeals against their convictions in the ₹190 million corruption case.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Asif was hearing the appeals filed against the convictions passed in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) reference.

During the proceedings, the appellants’ counsel, advocate Salman Safdar, informed the court that despite repeated requests, he was unable to meet Imran Khan at Adiala jail for instructions and obtaining a signed vakalatnama required for the prosecution of the appeals.

The lawyer argued that prison authorities repeatedly denied access to his client, thereby obstructing the legal process. He further told the court that his last meeting with Bushra Bibi took place in December and subsequent requests for access were also rejected.

Safdar argued that without direct instructions from the petitioners, the appeals could not proceed effectively. He also cited a recent Supreme Court decision in which similar relief was granted in comparable circumstances.

Expressing concern over the matter, Chief Justice Dogar observed that restricting access to counsel could hamper the administration of justice. He questioned the attorney general’s absence from the hearing and noted that ensuring access between lawyers and their clients was the government’s responsibility.

The court also recalled its earlier intervention aimed at facilitating meetings between the PTI founder and his legal team.

The bench then directed the Islamabad advocate general to ensure that meetings are held within seven days so that legal formalities, including signing the vakalatnama and obtaining instructions, can be completed.

The hearing was adjourned until the meetings were completed and the required documentation was submitted.
