Trump thanks Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin for remaining neutral during US-Iran war
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday publicly thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin maintained their neutrality during the recent military confrontation between Washington and Iran, crediting both leaders for avoiding steps that could have escalated the conflict or undermined subsequent peace efforts.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, after a ceasefire agreement was reached, Trump said Beijing and Moscow had refrained from any actions that could have complicated U.S. military objectives.
“I want to thank President Xi. He has remained neutral, completely neutral, and I appreciate that,” Trump said. “And I want to thank Vladimir Putin. He was also very neutral. They could have made things much more difficult for us.”
Trump reserved particular praise for Xi, suggesting that China had consciously avoided providing direct military assistance to Tehran despite its close ties to the Iranian regime. According to Trump, Beijing could have chosen to strengthen Iran’s position during the conflict, but instead showed restraint.
“They could have escorted oil shipments with warships or provided weapons systems, but they didn’t,” Trump said. “President Xi tried to help. I think he played a role in solving this problem.”
The remarks mark a notable departure from Trump’s recent criticism of several U.S. allies. During the conflict, it repeatedly accused European countries and Japan of failing to adequately contribute to military operations and efforts to secure vital maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran temporarily disrupted traffic in the strategic waterway.
China and Russia maintain strong diplomatic and economic ties with Tehran. While Beijing has condemned U.S. strikes against Iran as a violation of its sovereignty, U.S. intelligence assessments have indicated that Chinese entities were supplying Iran with dual-use goods that could support its military activities during the conflict. China also remained the largest buyer of Iranian oil despite US sanctions.
Russia, meanwhile, has warned that the war risks destabilizing the Middle East and could trigger a broader nuclear arms race in the region.
In response to Trump’s comments, the Chinese Embassy in Washington reiterated that Beijing has always worked towards de-escalation and peace. The Russian Embassy did not immediately comment on the US president’s comments.
