‘Those who looted public money in Bengal are sent to jail’: PM Modi promises rapid changes under BJP govt

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said those who had “looted public money” in West Bengal were now forced to return it and face jail, as he used the occasion of Paschimbanga Divas celebrations to intensify his attack on previous governments in the state.

“Those who looted public money in Bengal are now returning it and sent to jail,” Modi said at a rally in Tarakeswar in Hooghly district.

Indirectly attacking the TMC, the Prime Minister accused the previous governments in the state of hampering development and forcing people to leave Bengal in search of opportunities elsewhere.

“We have witnessed the functioning of previous governments. They took Bengal backwards and turned it into a land of exodus,” he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Modi said development efforts have gained momentum under the current regime and West Bengal is witnessing a new sense of optimism.

“There is a new freshness in the air of Bengal, as if the state is now free from its shackles,” he said, adding, “May these historical divas of Paschimbanga inspire the development of West Bengal.”

The Prime Minister further alleged that a previous state government had blocked land transfers required for border fencing.

“The previous Bengal government had stopped transfer of land for border fencing. This process started under the current regime,” he said.

PM Modi participates in ‘Paschimbanga Divas’ celebration

During the programme, Modi participated in Paschimbanga Divas celebrations and released the 23rd installment of PM-Kisan programme, transferring over ₹18,880 crore to over 9.44 crore beneficiaries across the country.

The event was attended by opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari, lawmakers, government officials and members of the public.

Modi also launched, inaugurated and laid the foundation stones of projects in the railways, agriculture, rural development, fisheries and livestock sectors.

Among the key announcements was the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) in West Bengal. The scheme is expected to provide insurance cover to nearly 50 lakh farmers across around 14 lakh hectares of agricultural land in the state during 2026-27, with crops worth an estimated ₹28,140 crore covered under the scheme.

The Prime Minister also dedicated himself to the nation and laid the foundation stones of railway projects worth approximately ₹590 million.

Besides, he inaugurated 49 road infrastructure projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-III), covering over 315 kilometers across various districts of West Bengal.
