Gwar frontman Michael Bishop – aka Blöthar The Berserker – has given more details on his thoughts on the right’s reaction to the on-stage “disembowelment” of someone dressed as Donald Trump.
The stunt took place at Riot Fest in Chicago last year, and conservatives on social media were not impressed. Some have called for Gwar to be stopped from performing live, despite the fact that the theatrical metal band has been assassinating political figures on both sides of the divide for years.
In a new interview with Rocking With Jam Man, Bishop says the band wasn’t doing anything new with this stunt. And any suggestion that the group is taking sides in America’s divided political landscape is simply false.

He says, “People were acting like Gwar had changed, but Gwar didn’t change. The world completely changed. The way people viewed politics changed. The way people viewed comedy and humor changed.
“For years, Gwar did whatever we wanted. We killed politicians on both sides of the aisle. We killed famous people. We never got any backlash.

“But until Donald Trump came to power, that’s when people started to get extremely unhappy with politics and music and politics in art.”
He points out that Gwar has already “killed” liberal figures, adding: “We killed President Obama. We haven’t heard from the secret services. But if you kill Trump, you better believe some shit is going to happen.
“And the truth is, people think you live in America, and you look around the world and you’re like, ‘Oh, well, we’re free. They’re not.’ This is bullshit.”
The reaction to this stunt was so extreme from some quarters that the group even received death threats.
But the backlash does not appear to have stopped Gwar’s plans in any significant way. They have a string of tour dates planned for this year.
