The extent of Trump’s Iran policy blunder becomes clear
Summary A new CBS News-YouGov poll finds that the vast majority of Americans want the war in Iran to end now — but because they want to end it, not because they think the United States won. Only 22% of respondents believe the Trump administration’s deal favors the United States over Iran. Most Americans believe the war created more problems than it solved.
The AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.
The first major poll since the Trump administration signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran presents a point that appears to be good news for Trump: Americans overwhelmingly agree that he should end the war rather than press for more concessions.
But it’s not because they really like the deal; it’s because they think the war is a debacle, and they just want to get it over with.
A new CBS News-YouGov poll shows that while Americans have their first glimpse — however tentative — of the finish line, it hasn’t improved their view of the war one iota.
And as the administration enters a new phase of this process, it’s worth checking where policies stand and what impact they might have moving forward.
The poll shows that 78 percent of Americans said they would prefer to end the war now, while only 22 percent wanted to hold on — “keep going…until Iran gives up more.”
At least one Trump political adviser celebrated the discovery on Sunday. He suggested it showed the American people were on the side of Trump and Vice President JD Vance on the Iran deal.
But the rest of the poll clearly shows that’s not true.
When asked to actually consider the deal, only 22% of Americans said it was better for the United States than Iran, while a significantly larger number – 37% – said it was better for Iran. (The remaining 41% said it was about equal.)
The percentage of people who say it is better for the United States includes only 39% of Republicans. Just to point out, only 4 in 10 members of Trump’s own party think his administration negotiated a victory here.
Americans also estimate between 45 and 29% that the war was not a success from a strategic point of view.
But this latest discovery could underestimate the scale of a strategic defeat that the Americans consider a defeat.
Perhaps nothing drives this home better than polls on the nuclear issue – Trump’s most important goal.
While Trump has repeatedly said his goal is to permanently stop Iran’s nuclear program, the CBS poll shows that 69 percent of Americans and even 45 percent of Republicans said the deal, if finalized to end the war, would fail to do so.
That echoes a Fox News poll taken the weekend the framework was being negotiated in mid-June. It shows that 64 percent to 35 percent of registered voters said a peace deal was unlikely to prevent Iran from producing nuclear weapons.
It should be noted that the agreement leaves many details for later, so there are still many questions to be resolved on the nuclear front.
But the Trump administration appears to be reversing some of its goals, and these findings run counter to the extreme pessimism that exists in the American public.
The new CBS poll also shows:
68% said the deal, if finalized, would not have stopped Iran from threatening other countries. Nearly half (48%) of Republicans surveyed agreed with this statement. 79% said it did not make Iranian leaders more pro-American. 74% said it failed to ensure the security and freedom of the Iranian people, which Trump said was one of his goals earlier this year.
A striking and consistent detail in the polls on the Iran war is that the results suggest that the war is seen not only as a failure, but also as counterproductive.
And it continues today.
Trump says the war destroyed Iran militarily and shattered its nuclear program. But only 37% of Americans believe that Iran is weaker today than before the war began.
More than 6 in 10 people believe that Iran is as strong as before (38%) or stronger (25%).
While Iran has certainly suffered significant military losses, it has also demonstrated considerable influence through its now-proven ability to blockade the Strait of Hormuz and imperil the global economy.
Speaking of which, Americans believe the war will likely continue to take its toll in the months and years to come.
A clear majority of 57 percent say the war actually “created more problems than it solved.” That’s nearly three times the 21 percent who said the system solved more problems than it created.
And when it comes to that impact, Americans seem to think that Trump simply didn’t understand what he was getting into.
The poll asked whether people thought the Trump administration understood the impact the war would have on the global economy.
At least 64% believe the war had a greater impact on the global economy than the administration expected. This includes 51% of Republicans surveyed.
Of course, there are plenty of arguments to support this claim – both in Trump’s public comments and in news reports. CNN reported in March that the administration had underestimated Iran’s willingness to attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz.
Americans just can’t wait for this to end — and think Trump is too
The final big lesson is that Americans are somehow on the same page with Trump: They just want this to be over, and they think Trump does too.
The mid-June Fox News poll showed that 70 percent of registered voters said they were concerned about the war becoming a long-term commitment. And 87% said it was important to avoid a protracted war.
This probably explains why people might be willing to accept a suboptimal deal. The administration has said the war will likely last about four to six weeks, and it has now been going on for almost four months.
Americans didn’t see many results during this time. And given that they didn’t really see any reason to go to war, it’s not a big logical move that they decided to cut bait.
And perhaps most tellingly, that’s what they think Trump is doing right now: trying to cut bait.
The CBS poll asked whether Americans thought the Trump administration was reaching this agreement because it had achieved all of its goals, or because it “wanted the conflict to end.”
Two-thirds of Americans said it was because the administration simply wanted to get it over with.
