PM receives condolence call from Qatar Emir after death of 12 Indians in gas explosion

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday thanked Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for personally reaching out and extending condolences over the death of 12 Indian nationals in the recent explosion at a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in the Gulf country.

“I thank His Highness the Amir of Qatar for his phone call and condolences over the loss of lives of Indian nationals in the tragic accident in the industrial city of Ras Laffan in Qatar,” PM Modi wrote.

He added: “We both share the grief of the families who lost their loved ones and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

The Prime Minister also highlighted the commitment of both countries to ensuring the security of their citizens. “India and Qatar remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring the security and well-being of our citizens and stand in solidarity with each other,” he said.

The phone call between the two leaders comes a day after the Indian Embassy in Doha confirmed that 12 Indians were among the 13 people killed in the explosion at the Ras Laffan LNG complex in Qatar.

The explosion was so powerful that it was felt in central Doha, more than 70 kilometers from Ras Laffan. The shock waves generated by the explosion shook the windows and caused panic among residents.

According to Qatari authorities, at least 66 people survived the explosion and were injured, and none of them were in critical condition.

After the explosion, Qatari Minister of Energy and CEO of QatarEnergy, Saad al-Kaabi, ruled out any possibility of sabotage.

He said: “This was an accident and not sabotage or hostile… Production at the factory has been intentionally completely shut down since December 2025 due to urgent maintenance needs. It was restarted for the first time only two days ago.”
