How popular is Donald Trump? See the polls as POTUS takes on Congress
President Donald Trump appears to be at odds with a Republican-controlled Senate.
On June 23, the Senate passed a symbolic war powers resolution, following the House of Representatives signaling support for ending the war in Iran. Also on June 23, Congress passed a housing affordability bill in a rare bipartisan moment. Trump was scheduled to sign the bill on June 24, but he canceled it, saying it wouldn’t happen until the voter ID requirement bill, the SAVE America Act, was passed.
At the same time, the cost of living is a major sticking point for voters. Polls have shown for months that Trump’s approval on inflation and the economy are his worst issues. Trump has said the war in Iran would be worth the cost, but polls released this week show a majority of voters are unlikely to agree. Low approval ratings could also cause more problems for Republicans in this year’s midterm elections, which are widely seen as a referendum on the presidency. See recent Trump opinion polls:
How popular is Trump?
Trump’s approval rating has been net negative for over a year and has fluctuated, but has trended even more negatively in recent months. Here is Trump’s average approval rating as of June 24, according to aggregators:
Poll shows Trump at 30%, career low
Trump’s approval rating has fallen to a new low in a recent American Research Group poll, with just 30% of Americans approving of his job performance heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
The survey, conducted June 16-20 among 1,100 respondents (with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points), found that 66 percent of people disapprove of Trump, the highest disapproval and lowest approval the survey institute has ever recorded during either of his presidencies.
Among those who disapprove of Trump, economic pessimism is widespread: 82% say they expect the situation to worsen over the next year, according to the poll.
Reuters/Ipsos: Trump at lowest 34% approval for his 2nd term
The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll released on June 23 shows that Trump’s approval rating has dropped to 34 percent, similar to April’s, which was the lowest level of the president’s second term. The 2 percentage point drop from Trump’s 36% approval earlier this month is within the poll’s 3-point margin of error. Trump began his second term with a 47% approval rating in media polls.
It also appears that a majority of Americans think the preliminary agreement between the United States and Iran is unlikely to lead to lasting peace between the two countries.
About 63% of Americans do not believe the deal Trump signed will bring peace, according to a June 23 poll of 1,268 Americans. About half of Republicans and eight in 10 Democrats surveyed between June 18 and 22 said the deal was unlikely to bring peace.
The poll found that only 18% of Americans – including 10% of Democrats and 34% of Republicans – consider lasting peace likely.
One in four Americans surveyed believe that Trump’s war against Iran was worth it, and 52% of respondents believe that the cost of American military action in Iran was not worth it, like a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in May before the signing of the agreement between the two countries.
CBS/YouGov: The war in Iran caused more problems than it solved
The majority of respondents to a CBS News/YouGov poll released June 21 believe the war in Iran has created more problems than it has solved.
In the poll of 2,519 U.S. adults conducted June 17-19, 57 percent thought the war created more problems than it solved, compared with 21 percent who thought the opposite and 21 percent who said “neither.” The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.
The poll also found that 78% of Americans think the United States should end the conflict now, compared to 22% who think it should continue until Iran gives up more. This majority includes 60% of Republicans and 56% of MAGA Republicans who agree that the United States should end the war now. The first round of Iranian peace talks concluded in Switzerland on June 22 and the sides said they had agreed on a road map to reach a final deal within 60 days.
The CBS News/YouGov poll found that 38% of respondents approve of Trump’s job performance, up slightly from the May poll. The rise was driven by white, non-college Americans who think gas prices will fall, CBS News reported.
