Trump threatens to tax 100% European countries that impose a digital tax | Donald Trump
Donald Trump has threatened to impose 100% import duties on any European country that imposes a tax on digital services from American companies.
In an article published Friday on Truth Social, the US president said that “many European countries” were considering imposing a digital services tax on US companies and that “some of these countries are on the verge of doing so”.
“Please let this statement serve to demonstrate that any country that imposes such a tax will immediately have a 100% TARIFF applied to all goods sent to the United States of America,” Trump continued.
He added that the tariffs would be imposed immediately and would replace any previous existing trade agreements with the country.
The threat could spark a new saga in Trump’s global trade war, in which he has imposed drastic tariffs on countries and economic blocs at a time. If Trump follows through on his warning, it could trigger a broader trade war between the United States and the EU if the 27-nation economic bloc feels compelled to retaliate against rising tariffs.
France, Spain and Italy impose a 3% digital services tax on large companies operating in their countries, while several other EU countries have implemented or proposed similar policies.
The UK imposes a 2% digital services tax which applies to social media platforms, large search engines and online marketplaces with global digital services revenues exceeding £500 million, total UK revenues over £25 million and “deriving value” from UK users.
The digital services tax applies to US technology companies such as Apple, Google and Amazon, and has raised more than £800 million in 2024-25, according to the UK Treasury.
An EU spokesperson said the economic bloc reserved the right to defend itself against such tariffs.
“Unilateral measures targeting such legitimate policies are unjustified. If continued, the EU will respond quickly and decisively to defend its rights and regulatory autonomy,” said Olof Gill, spokesperson for the European Commission.
Gill said digital services taxes did not target companies from any particular country and applied to “all large companies, regardless of their origin”.

Trump has repeatedly criticized countries that try to impose taxes or regulate U.S. technology companies. He had previously threatened to impose tariffs on any country that tried to do so.
In April, Trump said the U.K. could face “significant tariffs” for what he described as tax targeting of U.S. companies.
“They think they’re going to make easy money, that’s why they’ve all taken advantage of our country,” Trump said in April.
Trump’s threats came as a July 4 deadline looms for the EU and US to begin implementing a tariff deal. In May, the EU signed a trade deal with the United States that capped most tariffs on EU imports at 15% – a deal that came after months of wrangling and tension between the two sides.
Digital services taxes were not part of this agreement and continue to pose an obstacle to trade negotiations.
