Al-Qadir Trust case: IHC will hear IK and Bushra’s appeals tomorrow – Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court will hear the main appeals of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi against their convictions in the ₹190 million Al-Qadir Trust corruption case on Monday (June 29).

A two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Sardar Sarfaraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Asif will hear the appeals, which challenge the sentences handed down by an accountability court in January 2025.

The former prime minister was sentenced to 14 years in prison and fined 1 million rupees, while Bushra Bibi was sentenced to seven years and fined 500,000 rupees.

The case, also known as the Al-Qadir Trust reference, arises from allegations that Khan and his associates, during his tenure as prime minister, adjusted 50 billion rupees (£190 million at the time) that had been repatriated to Pakistan by the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency. The amount was linked to a property tycoon’s assets seized abroad. Investigators say the funds were used to pay fines on behalf of the businessman instead of being deposited into the public treasury, in exchange for land worth millions of dollars transferred to the Al-Qadir Trust.

This comes after the court previously rejected the couple’s requests to prioritize their requests for a suspended sentence, ruling that the requests had become “unfruitful” once the hearing of the main appeals had been scheduled.

During the proceedings in May, IHC Chief Justice Dogar had stressed that it was better to decide the main appeal at the earliest.

In addition to the main appeals, Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi have also filed contempt of court motions related to the case, which are expected to be considered alongside the appeals at the June 29 hearing.

The court had earlier directed the legal team to submit duly signed vakalatnamas within seven days to complete the required procedural formalities.
