Djokovic breaks Federer’s record in win over Safiullin, updated Wimbledon tennis bracket and results
Novak Djokovic is on his way to his ninth quarter-final at Wimbledon after beating Roman Safiullin in four sets on Sunday: 7-6(6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
The result was a major achievement for the legend as he now has more men’s singles victories at the All England Club than any other player.
Safiullin couldn’t have asked for a better start as he earned a pair of service breaks in the first set to take the lead 5-2.
The 28-year-old not only had to get through the qualifiers to reach the main draw, but also opened his Wimbledon run with five-setters against Andrey Rublev and Botic van de Zandschulp.
With the miles piling up, Safiullin couldn’t afford to dig himself into an early hole if he had any hope of upsetting the seven-time champion.
The Russian had two chances to close the set and Djokovic served at 2-5. At the time, Djokovic’s grab didn’t seem like the moment that turned the entire match, but it was.
Nearly losing the first set was a wake-up call for Djokovic, who immediately put Safiullin on the defensive.
This is not an uncommon phenomenon. Especially in the earlier rounds of major tournaments, Djokovic occasionally needs a challenge to find his sharpness on the court.
He scraped by in the tiebreak and failed to convert two set point chances before winning 8-6.
The second set was much less competitive as Djokovic lost a total of five points on serve. He earned a break in the sixth game, claiming a 2-0 lead in the set.
After building up such a large buffer, the 24-time Grand Slam winner took his foot off the accelerator in the third set. That saved Safiullin from an immediate exit, but only prolonged the inevitable.
Djokovic once again flipped a switch and was the far superior player in the fourth frame to wrap things up.
With the win, he will play third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime or number 22 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the quarter-finals.
Djokovic has split his two previous meetings with Auger-Aliassime, both of which took place in 2022, and is all-time 5-1 against Davidovich Fokina. Regardless of the opponent, he will likely be the favorite to get a ticket to the semi-finals.
