Turkey must be “included” in European security structures, says Erdogan

ISTANBUL:

Turkey must be included in all European defense and security structures, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday, a week before the key NATO summit in Ankara.

His remarks come as Europe seeks to revamp its defenses in light of the Russian threat and the risk of a US withdrawal from NATO, as the military alliance prepares for a key summit in the Turkish capital on July 7-8.

At stake is Turkey’s access to the EU’s 150 billion euro ($176 billion) Security Action for Europe (SAFE) initiative, a key program to boost European defense capabilities.

“Turkey’s indispensable contributions to European security are sometimes overlooked,” Erdogan told parliamentary delegates from NATO’s 32 member states in Istanbul, saying Turkey wanted to “participate in all defense and security initiatives” on the continent.

“We await your support, dear legislators, for the inclusion of Turkey in the defense and security initiatives announced by the EU.”

Although Turkey is technically eligible to access the SAFE initiative, it requires approval from all 27 EU members – something Greece has threatened to block.

The Turkish leader also urged NATO to remove all barriers blocking defense industry trade between alliance members.

“If we are to overcome the challenges we face, we must remove barriers to defense industry trade while ensuring balanced and equitable burden sharing among allies,” he said.
