Nadiem’s mother spoke about Jokowi’s statement after her son was sentenced to prison
tirto.id – The mother of former Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Mendikbudristek) Nadiem Anwar Makarim, Atika Algadri, referred to the statement of the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), regarding the case that happened to her son. Atika recalled that the policies implemented by Nadiem were Jokowi’s program when he was president.
“How come he made a statement a week ago, right? He said that Nadiem is a good person and all Nadiem’s programs are my programs,” Atika told reporters after Nadiem Makarim was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the alleged Chromebook corruption case which was read out at the Central Jakarta District Court, Jakarta, Tuesday (30/6/2026).
Atika considered that the statement made by Jokowi as the person who appointed his son as Minister of Education and Culture was a form of confirmation that the policy implemented by Nadiem was not a unilateral decision.
“The minister is the president’s assistant, he cannot travel alone,” he said.
On the other hand, this eighty-one-year-old woman also highlighted the structural factors that, according to her, made her son politically vulnerable during his mandate, namely the lack of support within a party.
“He (Nadiem) is not involved in politics. He is a minister chosen by the president, but he has absolutely no political base,” Atika said.
“So maybe that’s his weakness, he doesn’t have a political base. So it’s easy to do anything,” he continued.
However, Atika admits that her family will not give up the fight for justice for her son.
“If we are guilty, then we must let it go. But if we are not guilty, then we must fight until justice is done,” he said.
At the end, Atika also urged the public not to lose hope about the situation of law enforcement in Indonesia.
“Don’t give up. This country is important, this nation must be helped so that unpleasant, unreasonable and unfair things do not happen. But this is only a small part of this nation. The others are still good and can fight, can help too. Don’t despair. This is the true opinion of our family, don’t lose hope,” Atika said.
