Erdoğan rejects Israel’s recognition of Armenian genocide, highlights deaths in Gaza – POLITICO
Erdoğan has repeatedly said Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, and last week Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz described Israel’s vote to recognize the Armenian genocide as “an attempt to cover up their own crimes.” The Israeli government has strongly denied committing genocide.
The debate centers on the Ottoman Empire’s campaign, which is believed to have killed more than a million Armenians and is widely considered by scholars to be the first genocide of the 20th century. Many EU members recognize the events as genocide, and in 2015 the European Parliament adopted an anti-genocide resolution marking the centenary of the events.
Many researchers also consider Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute genocide.
In his speech on Tuesday, Erdoğan argued that Israel’s recognition is undermined both by its own “barbarity in Gaza” and by Turkey’s history of saving Jews from the Holocaust during World War II.
“There is merit in protecting those who fled… Nazi persecution,” Erdoğan said. “Those who slander Turkey and the Turkish nation… know this better than if they look at their own history. »
The Israeli Foreign Ministry did not respond to a request for comment at the time of publication.
