Key to Hormuz vault, PM Modi tells Masoud Pezeshkian; invitation extended to BRICS summit in India: Iran | News from India

In his first conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who signed a memorandum of understanding with US President Donald Trump on June 17 to end hostilities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed hope for “lasting peace in the region” and underlined “the importance of freedom of navigation” in the Strait of Hormuz, key to India’s energy imports.

According to the Iranian readout of the telephone conversation, published on

Modi, according to the Iranian statement, “conveyed the condolences and sympathy of the government and people of India over the martyrdom of the Supreme Leader and a number of Iranian officials and citizens during the recent war. He also announced that India would send a special delegation to attend the funeral ceremony of the martyred leader of the Islamic Revolution.”

The phone conversation took place days after Pezeshkian invited Modi to the state funeral of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike on Tehran on February 28. Khamenei’s funeral will begin in Tehran on July 4 and he will be buried in his hometown of Mashhad on July 9.

Modi may not be able to attend the funeral as he is scheduled to leave for a visit to three countries on the same dates. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar is likely to accompany the Prime Minister on the tour. The government, it is learnt, has chosen Bihar Governor Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain (retd) and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita as heads of the Indian delegation.

Following the Iran-US MoU, several India-bound ships successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz chokepoint. More than a dozen ships sailing to India have successfully crossed the strait, including three Indian-flagged oil tankers and several bulk LPG and fertilizer carriers.

But 10 to 12 Indian-flagged ships are still in the Persian Gulf. Despite the ban being lifted, shipping companies and seafarers have been instructed to maintain strict ship safety procedures: The conflict in West Asia has severely disrupted India’s energy imports and claimed the lives of several Indians in the region, including seafarers.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Iranian President briefed the Prime Minister on recent developments in West Asia and the way forward. Modi welcomed the agreement reached and reiterated India’s consistent stance that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, the statement said.

The Prime Minister, the Prime Minister’s Office said, reiterated the need to continue efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region and to safeguard freedom of navigation and trade.

The Iranian statement said Pezeshkian “expressed appreciation for the constructive positions taken by the Indian government and for Prime Minister Modi’s personal role in supporting peace, stability and regional cooperation.” He quotes Pezeshkian, saying that “the international community should work to consolidate this process so that aggression and the use of force no longer have a place in international relations.”

Pezeshkian also spoke about the convergence of views between Tehran and Delhi on many regional and international issues, particularly within multilateral organizations and forums, according to the statement.

Modi had earlier welcomed the understanding between the United States and Iran, saying the conflict in West Asia “has caused serious economic disruptions around the world and resulted in loss of lives in many countries.” India, he said, hopes that the implementation of this agreement will help restore peace and stability in the region and ensure freedom of navigation and trade.

Modi and Pezeshkian last spoke in March, following growing regional instability, but Tehran and Delhi have maintained regular channels of communication at different levels throughout the conflict.

Iranian Foreign Minister Syed Abbas Araghchi visited India in May for a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers. Ghadir Nezamipour, deputy secretary for defense affairs of Iran’s powerful Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), who was in Delhi last week to attend the NSA meeting of BRICS countries, also met the prime minister. Mohsen Paknejad, Iran’s oil minister, was also in Delhi for a meeting of BRICS energy ministers.
