Netanyahu vows to take Erdogan’s anti-Israel comments to Washington

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his administration takes Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s rhetoric against Israel “very seriously” and intends to raise the issue with the United States.
According to a Times of Israel report, Netanyahu stressed the seriousness of the regular threats emanating from Ankara, noting that Israel cannot afford to ignore such explicit hostility.
Addressing a cabinet session on Sunday, Netanyahu said: “Hardly a day goes by without Erdogan calling for the destruction of the State of Israel. We take these words very seriously, because if there is one thing we have learned from the history of our people, it is that when someone says they intend to destroy you, you must take them seriously.
The Israeli prime minister further noted that Tel Aviv would engage with Washington on this issue, saying: “We will also draw the attention of our American friends to these remarks. We will not ignore them.”
These latest frictions come amid a sharp escalation in tensions between Israel and Turkey since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict, sparked by the Hamas-led assault on October 7, 2023. Erdogan has positioned himself as one of Israel’s fiercest critics on the world stage, regularly leveling accusations of genocide in Gaza and supporting international legal proceedings targeting Israeli leaders.
Rhetoric from Turkish officials has become increasingly aggressive in recent weeks, with public calls to “liberate” Jerusalem straining an already fragile bilateral relationship.
This escalation of the diplomatic dispute was further underlined by targeted political maneuvering on Sunday, when the Israeli cabinet unanimously supported a resolution recognizing the massacres of Armenians under the Ottoman Empire during World War I as genocide. The move is widely seen as a deliberate diplomatic counterattack against Ankara.
Bilateral relations between the two countries, which have historically functioned as close regional allies, have faced a serious breakdown since the outbreak of hostilities in Gaza.
Ankara has frozen most of its commercial operations with Tel Aviv and has openly positioned itself as a fervent diplomatic supporter of Hamas. Conversely, Israel has repeatedly criticized Erdogan for maintaining a hostile posture and relying on highly inflammatory rhetoric.

The official designation of the Armenian Genocide has historically remained a very sensitive geopolitical fault line. Previous Israeli administrations have consistently avoided formal recognition to protect strategic ties with Turkey.
Ankara vehemently opposes the designation as genocide, arguing that the losses suffered during World War I occurred within the broader context of war losses rather than as part of a systematic extermination campaign.
