Benjamin Netanyahu: “voluntary migration” to Gaza is on the table, Jewish settlements are not discussed

“Voluntary migration” from Gaza remains on the table, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday evening, while refusing to rule out a new Jewish settlement in the strip.

Speaking in a special interview with Channel 14’s “The Patriots,” Netanyahu was asked by panelists about two questions that have become central to the right flank of his coalition: whether the “voluntary migration” of Gaza residents was still underway, and whether Israel could reestablish Jewish communities in the strip.

Channel 14 is a right-wing Israeli television channel whose programs are popular among Netanyahu’s political base. “Les Patriotes”, hosted by Yinon Magal, is one of its flagship political debate shows.

Asked if migration was still on the agenda, Netanyahu replied: “Voluntary migration.”

He was then asked about Jewish settlements in Gaza, particularly in light of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s recent comments that preparations were being made to establish settlements. Netanyahu previously said rebuilding Jewish settlements in Gaza was an unrealistic goal.

This time, Netanyahu avoided a direct response.

“The question is whether you prefer to act or to speak,” he said. “And yes, I prefer not to talk about it.”

Netanyahu: conducting his diplomatic policy “with force”

The response did not constitute an official policy announcement, but it was politically significant because Netanyahu chose not to publicly rule out this option. This came as ministers and right-wing activists increasingly argue that Israel must permanently change the reality in Gaza following the October 7 massacre.

Netanyahu then described his broader diplomatic approach as one based on tactical flexibility while remaining firm on core Israeli interests.

“Choose exactly the places where you have to stand up to the world,” Netanyahu said. “Where you can say yes, say yes, and where you have to defend your interests, say no. We must pursue our policy responsively and also forcefully. I promised we would change the Middle East, and we have.”

The comments on Gaza came during a wide-ranging interview in which Netanyahu also said Israel should begin a decade-long process of phasing out U.S. aid, defended his wartime decision-making after Oct. 7, warned Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan against threatening Israel and said that as long as he remains prime minister, Iran will not obtain nuclear weapons.

Asked if he wanted to stop receiving U.S. aid, Netanyahu replied: “Yes” and said he wanted a 10-year “incline” that would gradually reduce Israel’s dependence on Washington.

“We very much appreciate this help,” Netanyahu said.

He recalled that when he was first elected prime minister in 1996, he told Congress that Israel would pursue a free-market economic revolution and ultimately become independent of U.S. economic aid.

“Everyone opened their mouths,” he said. “Everyone said: look at this Prime Minister, who abandons aid for a title. »

Netanyahu said Israel’s economy was approaching $1 trillion and the country would be able to self-finance, “as early as next year.”

The prime minister also used the interview to explain how October 7 changed his view of the relationship between Israel’s elected leaders and the security establishment.

“A State with an army”, and not the other way around

“I have immense gratitude for our soldiers, our commanders and our security services,” Netanyahu said. “But what happened after October 7 is that I understood that we had a state with an army, and not the other way around.”

Netanyahu said many of the central operational decisions he made after the Hamas massacre were initially met with opposition or reservations from parts of the defense establishment.

He cited the decision to mobilize widely early in the war, focus forcefully on one front at a time, remain on the defensive against Hezbollah while dismantling Hamas, and later approve operations such as Operation Pager, Israel’s entry into Syrian territory, and strikes against Iran.

“As long as I am prime minister, Iran will not have nuclear weapons,” he said.

Asked if he was concerned about developments in Egypt and Turkey, Netanyahu focused his response on Erdogan, saying Turkey’s position was partly the result of Iran’s weakening.

“What Erdogan says about wanting to destroy Israel and retake Jerusalem, I think he forgot that the rule of the Ottoman Empire ended,” Netanyahu said. “Here is the State of Israel, the Israel Defense Forces and the people of Israel. We will not allow anyone to threaten us.”

Netanyahu also addressed the broader regional situation, saying Israel must remain strong to survive in the Middle East.

“The war will never end,” Netanyahu said. “You want to live in the Middle East? Be strong.”

He suggested other peace deals could be on the agenda, but declined to name the countries involved.

“There is still much to do,” Netanyahu said. “I won’t name names to get results.”

Netanyahu said Israel faced both major opportunities and major challenges, and argued that was why he wanted an expanded national government.

“I want an expanded national government because we face great opportunities and great challenges,” he said. “It’s not manipulation.”

At the same time, he said he had no intention of abandoning any of his current coalition partners.

“It’s not even a question,” Netanyahu said. “I am expanding the national camp.”

Asked whether the government’s judicial reform program would continue, Netanyahu replied: “Of course. Does anyone not understand that these corrections are necessary?”

Netanyahu also addressed the failure to pass the ultra-Orthodox bill, saying the coalition addressed the issue too late.

“We failed to get the bill passed because we got there late,” he said. “It is difficult to prevent desertions.”

The prime minister also spoke about his criminal trial and the public campaign against him, saying the experience had left a personal mark.

“What they are doing to me leaves scars,” he said. “It hurts, it even penetrates, but the mission is stronger.”

Despite what he described as the collapse of the case against him, Netanyahu said he still wanted a pardon.
