How popular is Trump today? New polls as America turns 250

America 250 celebrations span from local art to global tributes

From Alabama to Italy, America 250 celebrations highlight art, drone shows and innovation for the country’s 250th anniversary.

As America prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, President Donald Trump has promised a major speech on July 4, putting it at the center of one of the country’s biggest commemorations in decades. But alongside the America 250 festivities, another closely watched metric is garnering attention in Washington: Trump’s approval rating.

As the country marks a historic milestone and the 2026 midterm elections draw closer, new polls offer fresh insight into how Americans view Trump’s second term. Approval ratings for presidential jobs remain one of the clearest indicators of a president’s political strength, particularly as Republicans and Democrats eye key congressional elections that could determine control of Congress.

This week’s YouGov poll found that the overwhelming majority of Americans describe the state of the economy as “fair/poor” and “deteriorating,” while noting that the issues most important to them are:

Inflation/pricesEmployment and economyHealth

As Trump prepares to deliver what he has described as a lengthy Independence Day message to Americans, the latest polls offer a glimpse of where voters stand at a pivotal moment for both the president and the country.

How popular is Donald Trump today?

A recent poll by RealClearPolling shows that Trump’s job approval rating averages around 40 percent, while disapproval ratings remain significantly higher. A separate state-by-state survey released before July found that Trump’s national approval rating was below 50%, underscoring the political headwinds facing the White House heading into election season.

Today, Trump’s approval rating is 40.6% who approve of his work, compared to 57.4% who disapprove. That figure is down from his initial approval rating of 50.5% and disapproval of 44.3% when he took office in January 2025. It’s also lower than his first term’s average approval rating of 42.8% and former President Joe Biden’s overall approval rating of 43.2%.

According to the July 2 Rasmussen Reports daily poll, Trump’s approval is at 41 percent today, with disapproval at 56 percent. The Economist/YouGov poll completed June 29 found Jobs’ approval rating of 40 percent to 58 percent disapproval, down from 43 percent approval before the Iran war. The Morning Consult poll completed June 28 found 43 percent approval versus 55 disapproval ratings. The latest Quinnipiac poll found 38 percent approval to 55 disapproval. The RealClear poll, which takes the average of more than 16 pollsters including Emerson, Marquette, FOX News, Reuters/Ipsos, Harvard-Harris, RMG Research and many others, shows that Trump’s overall favorability is currently 40.6% as of July 2, up from 43.5% before the Iran war.

Note: Polls are constantly changing and different pollsters ask for the opinions of different segments of the population. These figures reflect the poll on Thursday July 2, 2026 at 9:30 a.m.

Who has the lowest presidential approval rating of all time?

Although Trump’s approval has fallen to an all-time low of 39.5% in polls this term so far, he has hit a low of 34% in the first term and other recent presidents such as Biden have hit a low of 36%, Barack Obama has hit a low of 40%, George W. Bush has hit a low of 25% and Bill Clinton has hit a low of 37%, according to Gallup polls, whose lowest recorded rating was Harry Truman with 22%.

When it comes to highest presidential approval ratings, George W. Bush holds the highest approval rating ever at 90%, while his father, George HW Bush, holds the second highest approval rating at 89%.

Trump is the only president who has not achieved an approval rating of 50% or higher to date in Gallup polling history.
