Turkey is emerging as an increasingly influential NATO member as European countries seek to strengthen their own defense capabilities and reduce their dependence on U.S. military support.
Ankara’s growing importance within the alliance is due to the rapid expansion of its domestic defense industry and increasing arms exports, reports The Caspian Post via Bloomberg.
Turkish defense companies now supply NATO allies with a wide range of military equipment, including drones, armored vehicles, warships, trainer aircraft and electronic warfare systems.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan plans to use the upcoming NATO summit to strengthen Turkey’s position within the alliance. Ankara should push for a more balanced distribution of defense spending among allies and seek to remove restrictions affecting trade in defense-related products.
The report notes that 56% of Turkey’s defense exports in 2024 were shipped to the United States, European countries and other NATO allies. Since 2020, foreign sales of the Turkish defense industry have reportedly quadrupled, reaching around $10 billion per year.
Turkey’s growing role comes as European governments reevaluate their security strategies amid a reduced U.S. military presence in the region and continued war in Ukraine, increasing the importance of stronger defense cooperation within NATO.
