Four arrested after child burned alive in attempted exorcism

GUJRANWALA:

A four-year-old girl is fighting for her life after being set on fire by her mother and other family members in a bid to “drive away evil spirits”, police said.

Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the horrific incident.

The shocking incident took place in Al-Badar town, under the jurisdiction of Aroop police station.

According to police, the child’s mother, Lubna, along with her two sons, Muneeb and Haseeb, and daughter Muzammal, placed the girl, identified as Marha, on a lit stove and set it on fire, believing that she was possessed by jinn and responsible for the family’s financial difficulties, illness and other misfortunes.

Police said a neighbor alerted authorities after hearing the child’s screams. The responding officers, led by SHO Qaiser Abbas Shah, forced entry into the house and rescued the badly burned girl.

The child suffered severe burns to his face, chest and other parts of his body.

She was first transferred to a hospital in Gujranwala before being referred to Mayo Hospital in Lahore for specialist treatment, where she remains in critical condition.

Police arrested the four suspects at the scene.

SP Civil Lines Imran Khan said the suspects, during initial interrogation, claimed that they believed the child was possessed by supernatural forces and burning her would remove the evil influence affecting the family.

The police filed a complaint against the state for charges of attempted murder, assault on police officers and criminal intimidation, as well as other relevant provisions of the law.

A court granted three-day pre-trial detention to the two suspects, while the two female suspects were remanded in police custody.

City Police Officer (CPO) Dr Ghayas Gul Khan described the incident as a tragic consequence of ignorance and harmful superstitions.

“The suspects initially claimed that they had performed rituals and burned incense to exorcise the child before resorting to this gruesome act,” he said.

The CPO added that investigators were also looking into whether a so-called healer or spiritual practitioner instigated or advised the family to commit the crime.

Police said the investigation continues to identify all those responsible and ensure the case is taken to its logical conclusion.
