Opposition Congress slams Modi over Seychelles price controversy, questions authenticity

India’s main opposition Congress party has reacted sharply to reports of an award given to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Seychelles, casting doubt on its authenticity, according to a British publication. The Guardian said in a report Friday.
As Modi arrived in Seychelles over the weekend, the Indian prime minister received the “Guardian of the Blue Horizon” award from Seychelles President Patrick Herminie, along with a trophy and certificate, according to the report.
However, according to The Guardianquestions quickly emerged about the authenticity and preparation of the award. The certificate reportedly contains spelling errors, including “repubblic” instead of “republic” and “Seychelles” instead of “Seychelles”.

The report added that the award was established just three days before Modi’s arrival and he was its first and only recipient. He further said that when the certificate was processed through software, it was widely reported as AI-generated.
The opposition Congress party seized on the controversy, with its leaders criticizing the development. “Give him [Modi] any reward, and he will come forward,” the party was quoted as saying in the report.
Congress politician Supriya Shrinate also commented on social media: “They were in such a hurry that they even got the official name of the Republic of Seychelles wrong. »
Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), however, defended the honor, describing it as a “proud moment for India” and praising the award for his “green leadership,” the report said.
On Thursday, Seychelles’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement clarifying that a “working draft” had been released in error and that an “authentic and duly approved” version had since been released. He adds: “The Guardian of the Blue Horizon distinction is authentic. »
According to The GuardianCritics have pointed to what they describe as Modi’s repeated receipt of accolades during his tenure, both in India and abroad.
The report cites previous examples, including an award reportedly established by the Israeli parliament shortly before Modi’s visit, and the Philip Kotler Presidential Prize in 2019, where Modi was the first recipient of an honor that was initially supposed to be awarded annually but was subsequently not awarded.
Reacting to the report, Information Minister Ataullah Tarar said it raised “serious questions about the politics of manufacturing prestige in India”.
“When foreign awards are created days before a visit, when certificates have basic spelling mistakes, and when the recipient becomes the first and only winner, the image management strategy becomes embarrassing,” he said in an article on X.
Tarar said the BJP had, for years, presented the honors as proof of India’s global recognition, despite the continuation of what he described as “hate-motivated policies” in the country.
“But the contrast is becoming increasingly difficult to hide: while Narendra Modi collects ceremonial awards abroad, ordinary Indians continue to face serious problems at home,” he added.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif also criticized Modi and his government, calling the episode “the most embarrassing story ever.”
“This has to be the most embarrassing story ever. Awards created days before arrival, certificates printed using a cheap AI model, obvious spelling mistakes, then Narendra Modi becoming the first and only recipient,” he said in an article on X.
Asif said the episode reflected an attempt at manufactured recognition and described it as either an exercise in cheap popularity or malicious gratification. He alleged that Modi shamed India and had become a national embarrassment.
