Footage of Imran Khan in Pakistan’s courtroom is generated by AI

As the conditions of detention of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan came under legal challenge in June 2026, publications shared an AI-generated video falsely claiming that it showed the imprisoned leader appearing in court. The video – and similar clips on social media – contain visual errors indicating synthetic content and were also flagged as AI-generated by a detection tool.

The short video appears to show the former Pakistani prime minister with his hands handcuffed as he addresses the court.

“Handcuffs only dampen the hands, not the morale,” reads part of the video’s Urdu caption.

The same video was also shared elsewhere on Facebook, as were similar clips of Khan appearing to wear the same clothes in the same courtroom.

Khan has been in prison since 2023 and was sentenced in December 2025 with his wife to 17 years in prison on corruption charges that they both deny (archived link).

The messages surfaced as Khan’s sister Aleema challenged the former leader’s prison conditions, calling them illegal and inhumane.

Pakistani newspaper Dawn reported: “According to the petition, during a meeting of lawyers held on April 8, it emerged that Imran was kept in solitary confinement for 22 hours a day, while his wife, Bushra Bibi, was allegedly kept in solitary confinement for 24 hours a day” (archived link).

It also claims the couple were denied family visits for months and raised concerns about Khan’s eyesight.

On June 30, Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro lifted procedural objections raised by the court registrar against the petition and against a similar petition filed by Bushra’s daughter Bibi (archived link). The court ordered that both petitions be formally recorded and scheduled for further hearing, leaving for a later decision whether they were legally admissible.

There have, however, been no official reports of Khan’s recent court appearance. The circulating video also contains visual errors indicating that it is generated by AI.

At the start of the clip, Khan’s thumbs appear to blend into each other. The handcuffs he is wearing also seem to break when he raises his hands.

An analysis of the video using the DeepFake-o-Meter detection tool developed by the University at Buffalo found that its detection models indicate a “high” probability that it was generated by AI (archived link).

Other similar clips that appear to show Khan in court are also AI fabrications.

They contain several visual inconsistencies with where he appears to be standing in the courtroom and who is serving as the judge, with their appearance changing throughout the clips.

The AFP has already debunked other misinformation about Khan that relies on distorted visuals.
