Indonesian Parliament approves $334 million for new capital Nusantara in 2027
Jakarta. The House of Representatives approved a budget allocation of 6 trillion rupiah ($333.5 million) for the development of the country’s future capital, Nusantara, in 2027, significantly below the 15 trillion rupiah requested by the Nusantara Capital Authority.
The funding approval indicates that construction of the new capital will continue despite lingering skepticism about the megaproject, which critics have sometimes called a “ghost town.”
Basuki Hadimuljono, director of the Nusantara Capital Authority, said the approved budget would support continued infrastructure development as the agency continues to seek additional funds under a multi-year funding program.
“I believe our financing needs will be met, God willing. For 2027, about Rp. 6 trillion has been allocated,” Basuki told Beritasatu.com during a visit to Nusantara in East Kalimantan on Monday.

“We also submitted a proposal because the funding is multi-year. Packages 1 and 2 cover the period 2025-2027, while Package 3 extends from 2026 to 2028. In total, the total budget amounts to Rs 48 trillion,” he added.
Approved funding is expected to begin supporting this year’s projects, including the construction of housing for Indonesia’s legislative and judicial institutions. In total, 45 residential towers are planned to be built between 2026 and 2028.
Nusantara has been officially designated Indonesia’s future capital in 2022 as part of President Joko Widodo’s plan to move the country’s administrative center from Jakarta, which faces chronic traffic jams, air pollution and land subsidence. The move is being carried out in stages, as the infrastructure is completed.
According to Indonesia’s current road map, Jakarta will remain the country’s legal capital and commercial hub under Law No. 2/2024, while Nusantara will gradually assume the role of political capital, housing the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government.
The Authority began construction of the legislative and judicial complexes in late 2025. Government data shows that almost 150,000 people now live in the wider Nusantara region, reflecting the project’s expansion of economic activity and population.
