Severe storms in China cause tornadoes, landslides that kill 15 | China
The death toll from devastating storms in parts of China rose to 15 on Tuesday, with hundreds injured and tens of thousands evacuated, state media reported, while the country’s leader Xi Jinping called for “all-out” efforts to rescue those affected by the severe weather.
Thunderstorms and strong winds killed at least 11 people and injured 331 others in central Hubei province, where “severe convective conditions” battered cities, while tornadoes were reported elsewhere Monday evening, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Xinhua also reported that 4,800 houses were damaged and 22 others collapsed.
“This episode of severe convection was characterized by its sudden onset and intense, short-lived winds,” the press release added.
In the southern region of Guangxi, heavy rain and severe flooding from Typhoon Maysak killed at least four people, and at least 50,000 people were evacuated, while eight people remained missing.
Authorities in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi, have taken the emergency flood control response to the highest level after torrential rains breached dams.
Dramatic video shared by state media showed a torrent of muddy water rushing down the collapsed concrete walls of a burst reservoir dam.
Xi said Tuesday that rescuers should “make every effort” to organize emergency operations, state media reported.
Rescuers wearing life jackets and helmets searched for people, while others were deployed on inflatable boats, state media footage showed.
On Tuesday morning, a landslide in a village in the northwestern province of Gansu buried 33 people in another incident, 17 of whom “were successfully rescued”, CCTV said, without specifying the cause.
Local authorities are “doing everything possible” to search for people still stuck, “relocate and properly settle affected residents, and strictly guard against secondary disasters,” he adds.
Natural disasters are common across China, particularly in summer, when some areas experience intense rains while others bake in scorching heat. Scientists warn that the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events globally will increase as the planet continues to warm due to fossil fuel emissions.
At least 22 people were killed in China in May after heavy rains hit central and southern regions, with some areas “hit by record rainfall”, state media reported.
