Red scare reignited as Trump leads campaign to attack Democrats as ‘communists’ | Donald Trump
Moments after Donald Trump rang the opening bell of the commencement ceremony Monday from the Oval Office, 232 miles north of Wall Street, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz celebrated the president’s new savings accounts as his administration’s “New Deal.”
“But instead of the government taking care of everyone,” the Republican senator said, “Trump’s accounts aim to make a capitalist out of every child and every American.” »
Following the primary election victories of democratic socialists and their close progressive allies in New York and elsewhere, Trump and his Republican allies are waging a broad campaign to label Democrats as communists, using the language of the John Birch Society that has fallen into dusty disuse.
As Trump often confuses democratic socialism with communism — a well-known Republican tactic that aims to weaponize voters’ fears of Marxism against liberal policies — he is making his accusation increasingly clear and distinct.
“Communism is the exact opposite of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is death, tyranny and the pursuit of evil,” Trump said, speaking at Mount Rushmore for a speech marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. “Atheistic communist morality says that everything is justified to create inhuman visions… They don’t want good. They don’t love God and they don’t want God. They don’t like religion and they don’t want religion, and they won’t have it, but we won’t let them win.”
No president had rung the White House before Monday’s event, perhaps because no president had wanted to tie state power so closely to financial markets.
But while Trump has intensified his attacks on communism, the self-styled business mogul president has overseen the most significant expansion of government control over private industry since the start of the Cold War, if not before.
The United States government owns a 9.9% stake in Intel Corporation and is the largest shareholder of the popular chipmaker. Trump redirected Chips Act money to save the company. The government has mandates to acquire an additional 5% of the private company.
This is just one of dozens of state investments nationalized since the start of Trump’s second term. The United States holds a 15% stake in MP Materials: the Department of Defense is the rare earth producer’s largest shareholder. The Department of Energy owns a 5% stake in Lithium Americas and a 5% economic interest in its Thacker Pass joint venture with GM.
Trump only authorized the acquisition of US Steel by a Japanese company on the condition of a “golden share” which gives the government a veto over certain industrial decisions taken by the steelmaker for reasons of national security. OpenAI is in talks with the administration to return 5% of its equity to the government.
The president has wielded tariffs like a cudgel, protecting or punishing industries — and some private businesses — based on White House policy or his personal whims. Nvidia and AMD only obtained export licenses for their valuable AI chips after agreeing to pay the US government 15% of revenue from their Chinese chips.
Nonetheless, Trump’s anti-communist language resonated across the right-wing media landscape.
“The party did it themselves,” said Fox News host Jesse Watters of the Democratic Party. “They screwed up so much and did nothing when they had power, that they had to play football with communists to consolidate their base. They are weak. Brand is in the toilet. And they opened the door just ajar and danger came in. They are cold-blooded revolutionaries who want to bury America.”
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani also spoke out in the run-up to Independence Day, criticizing wealth inequality and capitalism in his speech. The right has seized it.
“The barbarians are inside the door,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said Sunday on Fox News, calling democratic socialism “a serious threat to our entire system of government.”
“This is what you expect from communists,” Matt Mowers, a former White House adviser, told NewsMax. “That’s why he chose the day before our 250th celebration of our independence to launch this type of divisive speech,” Mowers said. “He’s trying to tear people apart at a time when we should be united and celebrating.”
Mowers lost the Republican nomination in the 2022 congressional primary to Trump press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who, in comments to Watters over the weekend, attributed Gen Z’s complaints about the cost of living to “laziness” and “silver spoons in their mouths, just to get everything handed to them.”
Leavitt walked back his remarks.
“Many Republicans think this is a good development. They say it will make it easier to win the midterm elections because Americans don’t like socialists,” said far-right commentator Barbara Boyd of Promethean Action in a video that attempts to link Mamdani to Italian Marxists who have been dead for almost a century.
She is one of several conservatives circulating an agenda written by the Marxist Unity Group, a radical faction within the Democratic Socialists of America that wants the DSA to break away from the Democratic Party and advocate for the elimination of the U.S. Senate and the U.S. Supreme Court.
“So how can we beat this? » said Boyd. “Probably not, as the Republicans suggest, by constantly whipping about how crazy these people are, even if they are crazy…We need to make the culture that Donald Trump is recreating, American culture, conscious of our people.”
