Fact Check: Five False Claims Trump Made in Meeting with Erdogan

President Donald Trump delivered a series of false statements about Greenland, the United States and his own achievements as he spoke to the media during a meeting Tuesday with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara.

Perhaps the most topical lie was about Greenland, the semi-autonomous Danish territory that Trump has again called for the United States to control. He falsely claimed, as he has done before, that the island was “surrounded by Chinese and Russian ships.” This is simply not the case, as independent experts and various foreign governments have made clear.

Trump also revived his long-debunked claims that he “settled eight wars,” that former President Joe Biden gave Ukraine “hundreds of billions of dollars worth of equipment,” that “$19.2 trillion” or more was invested in the United States since he returned to power last year, and that the 2020 election was “rigged.”

Here’s a fact check.

Greenland, Russia and China

Trump said Greenland was “surrounded by Chinese and Russian ships.” But there is simply no basis for this claim – which has already been rejected by independent experts, the Danish government and military, officials from other Nordic countries, Greenlandic officials and residents, and current and former US officials.

In an interview published last month, the commander of Danish military forces in the Arctic said that, as usual, they had not seen any Chinese or Russian ships in or around Greenland, Danish media outlet TV 2 reported. P. Whitney Lackenbauer, a professor at Trent University in Canada and an expert on Arctic security issues, told CNN in January that Trump’s claim was “completely made up,” and Lackenbauer reiterated in an email Tuesday that the statement “remains inaccurate”.

It is possible that Trump recently saw classified intelligence showing Chinese or Russian maritime activity near Greenland. But even that would not mean that Greenland was “surrounded.”

Trump and wars

Repeating one of his most frequent false claims about foreign affairs, Trump said: “You know, I’ve solved eight wars. » He didn’t. His list of the “eight wars” is very imperfect.

Trump’s list includes two situations that were never wars during his term: a diplomatic dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia and a supposed mysterious situation between Serbia and Kosovo. The list also includes a war involving Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has not ended despite a peace deal brokered by the Trump administration.

Additionally, the list includes the war between Israel and Hamas, but Israel continues to carry out near-daily attacks in Gaza despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement. And that includes the brief 2025 conflict between Israel and Iran, although Israel has joined the United States in starting another war against Iran in 2026.

Biden and aid to Ukraine

Speaking about Ukraine, Trump said, as he has before, that “when Biden was here, he gave them equipment worth hundreds of billions of dollars.” This statement of “hundreds of billions” is a considerable exaggeration. According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, a German think tank that closely tracks international aid to Ukraine, the United States allocated approximately $74 billion in military aid to Ukraine (at current exchange rates) between late January 2022, just before Russia’s full-scale invasion, and through April 2026. Including financial and humanitarian aid, total U.S. aid was approximately $132 billion.

Trump also reiterated his frequent false claim that “we have $19 trillion, $19.2 trillion to be exact, invested in the United States.” This time, he added that this supposed total only related to the first 12 months of this presidential term, “so this figure is now considerably higher” after almost 18 months back in power.

But even the $19.2 trillion figure is a fiction.

At the time Trump made the statement Tuesday, the White House’s own website claimed that “$10.6 trillion” had been spent on “major investment announcements” during that period, and even that was a major exaggeration of actual investments. A detailed CNN analysis in October found that the White House had trillions of dollars in vague investment promises, promises that were about “bilateral trade” or “economic exchange” rather than investment in the United States, and vague statements that didn’t even rise to the level of promises.

The White House figure includes pledges from U.S.-based companies as well as foreign entities. Federal data released last month showed new foreign direct investment in the United States totaled about $232 billion in 2025.

Trump, as usual, described the 2020 election as “a rigged election.” It’s a lie. Trump lost a legitimate election to Biden, fair and square.
