Buffalo head trampling ritual in Lampung attracted by politics, Jokowi: not connected

The 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) opened his voice regarding the buffalo head stamping ritual procession he carried out when receiving a traditional title in Lampung.
Jokowi asked that the awarding of the traditional title of Kedaton Lampung not be dragged into the political realm.
“Yes, this is a form of respect from the indigenous people of Lampung. A form of respect from the Kedaton Royal Palace of Lampung,” Jokowi told the media team at his residence in Sumber, Banjarsari, Solo on Tuesday (7/7).

Jokowi admitted that he was honored by the award given by the Lampung traditional community. According to him, this ritual has no connection with politics.
“I feel honored to receive this award. And don’t bring everything into the political realm, that often serves no purpose,” he stressed.
The former mayor of Solo called on all parties to continue to uphold and respect the diversity of customs that exist in Indonesia. According to him, local wisdom is a national asset that must be protected.
“We must continue to respect customs, continue to respect local wisdom, continue to respect our cultures because our culture is very diverse,” he said.
When asked if the white-snouted buffalo head was associated with the symbol of the white-snouted bull’s head, Jokowi just laughed. Jokowi reiterated that what he wore was part of a traditional ritual that had existed for a long time.
“It’s a traditional ritual. Again, it’s a traditional ritual that hasn’t been done once or twice, but hundreds of times,” Jokowi concluded with a laugh.
Jokowi received the title of “Great Leader of the Nation” from the Kedatun Keagungan Lampung during a traditional procession held at Jalan Sultan Haji, Bandar Lampung City, Saturday (27/6).
Lampung traditional figure Mawardi Rahma Harirama, whose title is Sultan Seghayo Dipuncak Nur, explained that the procession of bestowing traditional titles or muachehi has been an inseparable part of the culture of the Lampung people for thousands of years.
This ritual has philosophical significance as a symbol of eliminating bad traits in humans. Mawardi also asked the public not to link the traditional procession with political interests.
“Putting toes on the head of a buffalo eliminates animal traits in itself, such as arrogance, envy, greed and other bad traits. So it has nothing to do with politics,” said Mawardi, quoted by detikSumbagsel, Monday (29/6).
