Trump gets an airport and a bridge named after him on the same day, continuing the model
As this week began, Donald Trump hosted an event in the Oval Office during which he admitted that he has, “in certain cases,” ordered Republicans to put his name on various priorities. A day later, as the NATO summit in Türkiye opened, he told reporters that he was “very happy” to see that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had named a new airport building after him.
Two days later, the Republican celebrated again when the airport in West Palm Beach, Florida, officially adopted its new name – President Donald J. Trump International Airport – marks the first time in American history that an airport has been named after a sitting president. (Major carriers have already started using Trump’s initials on their online booking pages.)
Under a licensing agreement between Palm Beach County commissioners and Trump’s family business, the Trump Organization can profit from airport merchandise sold off airport premises. The New York Times reported that this unique arrangement, which does not exist for other airports named after presidents, “also gives the Trump family control over any biographical material presented at the airport or on airport equipment. And it requires the airport to choose a vendor to supply any branded merchandise from a list approved by the Trump family business.”
On the same day as the official renaming of the facility formerly known as Palm Beach International Airport, Trump also had a bridge named after him.
On Thursday afternoon, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent traveled to Tennessee to host an event renaming a bridge on Interstate 40 in honor of his boss. He was joined by the state’s two Republican senators, as well as various Republican and federal state lawmakers.
With these developments in mind, it is time once again to update the growing list linked to the increasingly bizarre campaign to glorify Trump:
American currency: Trump recently announced plans to put his signature on US dollars – a first for a sitting US president – not to be confused with plans for a massive 3-inch commemorative gold coin depicting his face.
Rename buildings: The president’s allies attempted to add Trump’s name to the Kennedy Center and succeeded in adding him to the Peace Institute. According to some accounts, the president expects proposed ballroom at the White House also bear his name.
American military: Plans to build “Trump-class” battleships are underway, and the country’s next-generation fighter jet is expected to carry the designation “F-47” in his honor. (Trump is the country’s 47th president.)
Passports: The State Department is printing 40,000 Trump-branded commemorative passports, which became available last week.
Training and standards: The training of new immigration and customs officers was reduced from 50 days to 47 days in honor of Trump. (THE accelerated training program was later changed.)
