A GROUP of PTI leaders, calling themselves the “National Dialogue Committee” and led by the likes of former Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry and former Sindh Governor Imran Ismail, attempted to re-enter the party. Their suggestions to the current party leadership have generally been practical, even reasonable. However, they have not gone down well with the PTI leadership and cadres, nor the majority of the party’s supporters, mainly because they are seen as among those who abandoned the party in this hour of crisis. The group recently managed to secure a meeting with the less-talked-about PTI leaders incarcerated in Kot Lakhpat jail, including Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Dr Yasmin Rashid. A brainstorming session on the political and economic crises in Pakistan led to the realization that negotiations remain the way forward. Mr. Qureshi reportedly suggested, while acknowledging the defense force chief’s successes in international diplomacy, that the focus should perhaps now be on a national dialogue for political stability within the country. It has further been suggested that providing Imran Khan with the medical facilities he needs and lifting the ban on meeting him could significantly ease political tensions.

Again, while this is all reasonable, it doesn’t matter if the PTI and Mr Khan disagree with those trying to be ‘helpful’. And it doesn’t matter if ruling parties and policymakers see no benefit in political reconciliation. The fact is that intransigence on both sides has led the nation to this impasse, where state institutions are now unable to fulfill their obligations to the people. The economy has been lifeless for years and the misery of the population, once promised as temporary and only for the stabilization period, is gradually becoming more permanent. The state, which has resolved to be a “hard” state for all intents and purposes, seems far less wary than it should be of the resentment brewing in people’s hearts as the world moves forward and Pakistanis are increasingly left behind. Poverty has increased sharply and the middle class continues to shrink, creating a vast chasm between the masses and the power elite. The country’s options will be further reduced if no steps are taken to exit this path of instability. The sooner authorities change course, the greater the chances of averting catastrophe.
