Donald Trump’s failure to abandon 2020 is a ‘worrying sign’ as upcoming midterm elections approach

Despite winning two presidential elections, Donald Trump remains obsessed with the one he lost.

Using a prime-time address to the nation to repeat long-debunked claims about his 2020 election defeat is a desperate and unusual move.

Usually, these types of addresses are reserved for big moments with urgent national consequences, such as war or emergencies. But for Trump, “it’s not getting bigger.” [than this] because without free and fair elections, there is no country.”

This from the same man who regularly praises dictators and authoritarian leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean strongman Kim Jong Un and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Trump uses his speech to make a litany of claims about election integrity

US President Donald Trump is using a presidential speech to accuse China of inappropriately trying to influence the 2020 election and prevent him from winning the presidency.

Struggling to find a way out of an increasingly unpopular foreign war that is exacerbating domestic economic problems, the US president is once again returning to a favorite grievance: the 2020 election that he lost to Joe Biden.

Despite his own Justice Department, multiple lawsuits and a number of independent studies that have failed to find evidence of widespread voter fraud or significant manipulation, Trump has not let up. And although he said the goal of his speech was to “not weaken confidence” in the system, critics say that’s exactly what he did.

Many analysts fear the president could set the stage for doubts about the integrity of the elections ahead of the midterm elections in November or a challenge to the results if Republicans lose control of Congress.

Austin Sarat, a political science professor at Amherst College, calls the approach of using a national discourse — a forum to elevate the issue as one of urgent national importance — “thermonuclear.”

“This is a worrying sign that the 2026 elections in the United States are unlikely to go smoothly and easily,” he said.

Trump’s speech was delivered in a country in which 28% of voters already believe the 2020 election was “rigged,” according to a recent YouGov poll.

Like many things in this country, this result is sharply divided along party lines, with 50 percent of Republicans and only 9 percent of Democrats agreeing.

Two-thirds of Republicans who identify as MAGA supporters already believed the election fraud claim before tonight’s speech.

The common denominator of Trump’s ‘rigged’ election

After spending much of his speech lashing out at his enemies, the so-called “deep state” and the media that chose not to broadcast his speech live for fear of serving as a platform for misinformation, Trump called for unity.

“All Americans, whether Republican, Democrat, independent or otherwise, should be able to agree that we deserve the most secure, honest and fair voting system in the world,” he said.

But many voters would notice the coincidence: The only elections Trump considers “free and fair” are the ones he won, while the ones he lost are “rigged” or “stolen.”

Dr. Sarat says the president has already taken steps to undermine election integrity by highlighting rare instances of non-citizen voting and pushing for the SAVE America Act – a bill that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and provide ID at the polls.

Critics say it would limit voting rights for millions of people.

Dr. Sarat says using a national address to raise questions about the democratic process, “as they say in nuclear war movies, will take it to DEFCON 5.”

In Washington, some wonder whether he could take his electoral denial to the extreme. Could he interfere in – or even cancel – the midterm elections in order to maintain control of Congress?

It may seem far-fetched, but Trump has already hinted at his desire to cancel the upcoming midterm elections. His publicist later said he was joking. But now he’s using a presidential speech to tell Americans they can’t trust the system.

What it’s like to try to vote in America

Every election, an unknowable number of Americans want to vote but never learn how to register, receive proper identification, find their polling place, or have time to wait in very long lines.

Other analysts, like Sean Morales-Doyle of the Brennan Center for Justice, say overturning the election rather than overturning it is potentially worse.

“Vladimir Putin did not cancel an election. Iran holds regular elections,” he said.

“In the 21st century, the game is “competitive authoritarianism” in which democratic institutions and elections persist, but are gutted by existing authoritarian leaders.

“Elections, even if rigged, give legitimacy to leaders.”
