India’s first private Vikram-1 orbital rocket takes off; PM Modi calls it proof of ‘Atmanirbharta’
India marked a milestone in its private space sector on Saturday with the liftoff of Vikram-1, the country’s first private orbital-class rocket, carrying several technology demonstration payloads and a postcard from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Named ‘Mission Aagaman’ (Arrival), the launch of the test flight marks a historic milestone for the country’s commercial space sector, executed by Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace.
On a cloudy day, the seven-story, four-story Vikram-1 rocket took off at 12:05 pm on Saturday from the first launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.
Following a “planned hold”, due to apparent navigation issues, the launch was revised to be 35 minutes late from the initially pre-arranged time of 11:30am.
After its initial journey of just under 16 minutes, Vikram-1 is expected to place the payloads, both domestic and foreign, into a low Earth orbit (LEO) at an altitude of 450 km with an inclination of 60 degrees.
Vikram-1, named after the legendary Vikram Sarabhai who is often considered the father of the Indian space program, is built with an all-carbon composite structure and powered by in-house developed propulsion systems including 3D printed engines and high thrust solid fuel rocket boosters.
The rocket carries payloads from Skyroot’s Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve, DCubed and SCOPE, as well as a work of art titled “Cosmic Bloom.”
The successful launch of Vikram-1 will bring Skyroot closer to its goal of offering what it calls a “taxi service to space,” where companies can rent a rocket “to travel to a single location in orbit to place a satellite or visit a space station,” the BBC reported.
