Pakistan summons Imran Khan’s sister after controversial comments on army, conflict with India

Pakistan’s cybercrime body has summoned Noreen Niazi, sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, accusing her of spreading “false, offensive and inflammatory” content on social media to defame state institutions and spread “false narratives”.

The summons comes after an interview with Ms. Niazi was widely shared on social media, in which she claimed that the Indo-Pakistani military confrontation of May 2025 was the result of collusion between Pakistan’s military leadership and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was orchestrated to improve the image of the armed forces.

The National Cybercrime Investigation Agency issued the summons on Saturday (July 19, 2026), asking Ms. Niazi to report to its office in Islamabad on Monday (July 20, 2026) to record her statement.

“It has been established that you disseminated false, offensive and inflammatory content on social media in order to defame state institutions and spread false narratives,” the notice said.

The agency, which is investigating the case, warned that failure to comply would mean “you have nothing to present or declare in your defense,” according to a report in Pakistan’s Express Tribune newspaper.

Ms. Niazi, in the interview, sought to downplay the Pakistani armed forces’ response to India during the four-day armed conflict last year, triggered by the Pahalgam terror attack.

She claimed, without providing evidence, that India had refrained from escalating the conflict because Pakistan was preparing to recognize Israel and that this episode was intended to facilitate Islamabad’s entry into the Abraham Accords.

Pakistan is one of the countries that does not recognize Israel as a state and does not maintain diplomatic relations with it. The Abraham Accords are a series of US-brokered agreements in 2020 that established diplomatic, economic and security ties between Israel and several Arab countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco.

“What do you think?… India, which is a big country, was not in a position to respond to Pakistan during its attack on May 10?” Ms Niazi said in the interview. “That could have been the case, but India deliberately refrained from giving a firm response due to some understanding.” Ms. Niazi’s remarks drew a sharp reaction from Punjab Information and Culture Minister Azma Bokhari, who belongs to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

“Noreen Niazi’s statement reflects the mindset of her brother Imran Khan. Khan’s family has always seemed uncomfortable with Pakistan’s achievements and the remarks made against the national interest are deeply regrettable,” Mr. Bokhari said on Saturday (July 18, 2026), adding that Mrs. Niazi’s remarks in support of Prime Minister Modi are “highly condemnable.”
