US President Donald Trump has rejected New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s threat to arrest the Israeli prime minister for war crimes if he visits the city.

Trump insisted that Benjamin Netanyahu “will not be arrested in any way” during his stay in the United States.

The president made the promise Monday in a social media post that did not directly name Mamdani but credited Israel with helping the United States in its war against Iran.

Mamdani said earlier that his administration was still considering whether to arrest Netanyahu if he attended the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September.

“I believe Prime Minister Netanyahu has a place in The Hague,” Mamdani said in an interview published Saturday.

The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in 2024, accusing him of committing war crimes during Israel’s genocidal war against Gaza.

“He is a war criminal who has been indicted by the International Criminal Court,” Mamdani added, saying his view is shared by many, given the actions the Israeli prime minister has “carried out over the past few years.”

Mamdani said he still did not know whether he had the legal authority to order the Police Department, which he oversees, to arrest a foreign leader and was in “active conversations” with the city’s Law Department.

“Whatever the law allows me to do in New York, that’s what we will do, but we will not write our own laws for that purpose,” he said.

During his mayoral campaign, Mamdani warned that he would order police to arrest Netanyahu if he set foot in the city, presenting this as enforcement of the ICC arrest warrant.

Netanyahu usually travels to New York every September for the UN gathering.

The ICC, created in 2002 to judge genocides, crimes against humanity and war crimes, has jurisdiction that Israel rejects; neither Israel nor the United States are members of the court.
