Ozel launches a new party
In his speech to CHP lawmakers and other parliamentary officials, Ozel said, “We are creating our new party by taking the first step with the deputies chosen by our nation,” and added, “These are the determined steps of a march towards the government of Turkey.”
The court ruling cites alleged irregularities in a vote at the 2023 party congress that nominated Ozel as CHP president and reinstated Kemal Kilicdaroglu, while Ozel framed the case as a legal attack on the CHP.
The new political movement, expected to be called Yeni Parti, or New Party, is expected to be officially launched later this week, with many of the CHP’s 135 lawmakers in Turkey’s 600-seat parliament expected to defect.
AFP reported that Ozel told lawmakers at the party’s weekly parliamentary group meeting that Turkey stood to “a historic crossroads” and declared that the new party would become the main opposition force “by far”.
Repression and Competing Narratives
Ozel’s announcement comes as criminal investigations across Turkey, primarily alleging corruption in CHP-run municipalities, have led to the arrest of hundreds of elected officials and party members, including Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul.
Both AFP and DW linked the leadership crisis to a court ruling that removed Ozel and reinstated Kilicdaroglu, with DW saying Ozel’s supporters see the case as part of a broader campaign by Erdogan to weaken the opposition while the government insists that Turkey’s courts operate independently.
In his farewell speech, Ozel told lawmakers, “Once the necessary procedures are completed, the new party we are about to create will become by far the main opposition force in the Grand National Assembly,” and he added, “We carry within us an unwavering hope for a new beginning,” as lawmakers gave him a standing ovation.
DW reported that Ozel was removed as CHP leader by court ruling in May, in a ruling that also reinstated Kemal Kilicdaroglu as interim leader, and said the dispute had deepened division within Turkey’s opposition.
The Jerusalem Post said Ozel’s fiery speech included the phrase: “Today we stand on the brink of a sad farewell that has become inevitable and whose time has come,” and he described his supporters cheering and chanting “Free Turkey, free future.”

AFP reported that Ozel was expected to submit an application to the Interior Ministry on Monday to create the new party, while DW reported that Ozel was expected to submit an application to the Interior Ministry to create the new party called “Parti Yeni” (“New Party”).
The Times of Israel reported that for the new party to become Turkey’s second-largest parliamentary party and main opposition, it would need at least 68 of the CHP’s 135 MKs, and it said political insiders expected between 83 and 85 CHP MKs to join it.
Al Jazeera reported that many of the CHP’s 135 MPs in the 600-seat parliament are expected to defect and join the new party, which Ozel said would become “by far” the main opposition in parliament, while noting some suggestions that the split could work in Erdogan’s favor by dividing opposition forces.
In another piece of political arithmetic, The Times of Israel said the opposition’s deepening crisis – including the imprisonment of hundreds of its municipal officials and members since late 2024 – was seen as a test for Turkish democracy and could strengthen Erdogan’s chances of extending his rule by more than two decades in elections to be held by May 2028.
