President Trump to visit Michigan ahead of swing state’s primary elections

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is expected to rally in Michigan next week as in-person voting begins for the warring state’s primaries, where voters will choose candidates for open Senate and gubernatorial races.

The rally is expected to take place Monday in Oakland County, according to a person familiar with the plans who was not authorized to publicly discuss the event.

In-person early voting begins Saturday ahead of the Aug. 4 primary, when voters will also select candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives and other statewide offices. Republican Mike Rogers is unopposed in the Senate primary, while the GOP gubernatorial race has heated up between Trump-backed U.S. Rep. John James and businessman Perry Johnson.

The visit will allow the president to deliver his message on the road, as Republicans worry about how rising gas prices and an unpopular war in Iran could affect their midterm chances. Republicans are defending slim majorities in the House and Senate.

Trump won Michigan in 2016 and 2024, and both parties view the battleground state as a centerpiece of the 2026 midterm elections.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Democrats face the most competitive race in the Aug. 4 primary, with U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens and progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed battling for the party’s Senate nomination. The winner will face Rogers, who narrowly lost in 2024 to Now-Sen. Elissa Slotkin.

Republicans, however, faced a bruising race for the gubernatorial nomination, with Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s term limited. James was endorsed by Trump, but Johnson spent millions attacking James on television and in digital advertising.

Johnson’s campaign already announced a “Trump Tailgate” on Monday.

Oakland County, where Trump is scheduled to appear, has long been considered one of Michigan’s top political counties. Democrats gradually widened their margins there, even though Trump won the state in 2016 and again in 2024.

Republicans saw 2026 as an opportunity to finally regain power in a state dominated by Democrats — aside from Trump’s victories — for the past decade. But soaring gasoline prices, an unpopular war in Iran and tariffs that hit the state’s auto industry hard have all helped fuel concerns about a worsening political environment for Michigan Republicans.

In May, a Democrat won a special election by nearly 20 points in a state Senate district that Kamala Harris won by less than a point in 2024. The previous incumbent, a Democrat, won the seat by 6 percentage points in 2022.
