PTI chief urges people to join campaign for Imran Khan’s release – Journal

KARACHI: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday announced that it would observe August 5 as ‘Black Day’ across the country to mark the third anniversary of the imprisonment of former Pakistan Prime Minister and party founder Imran Khan.

He also urged the public to participate in the “peaceful campaign” for the release of Mr Khan and the “restoration of constitutional order”.

The announcement was made by Barrister Salman Akram Raja, General Secretary of PTI, while addressing the media during a visit to Karachi, where he also met provincial leaders and office bearers of the party to discuss the political situation in the country, organizational issues in Sindh and future strategy of PTI.

“We will observe August 5 as a nationwide Black Day and appeal to the people to raise their voice for the release of Imran Khan, restoration of the Constitution, democracy, public mandate and reduction of inflation,” he said.

He alleged that Imran Khan had been “unjustly imprisoned” for the past three years and said the PTI would continue its “peaceful and constitutional struggle” across the country until his release. Earlier, Mr. Raja visited the residence of PTI Sindh President Haleem Adil Sheikh to condole the death of his brother. He prayed for the soul of the deceased and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.

The condolence meeting was attended by PTI Karachi President Raja Azhar, General Secretary Arsalan Khalid, leaders of party Sindh and Karachi chapters, Sindh Assembly members, representatives of Insaf Lawyers Forum, Women’s Wing and Youth Wing, and other office bearers and workers.

Speaking to the media, the PTI general secretary criticized the country’s economic situation, saying unemployment was rising and forcing young Pakistanis to seek opportunities abroad while inflation was putting an increasing burden on ordinary citizens. He also claimed that oil prices in Pakistan were among the highest in the region and that current economic policies had widened the gap between the rich and the poor.

Criticizing the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government in Sindh, Mr Raja said the province’s resources had been “destroyed” during its 18 years in power. He said farmers and agricultural workers were facing severe difficulties due to water shortages, while roads and public infrastructure across Sindh had deteriorated significantly.

“Articles 15, 17 and 19 of the Constitution guarantee citizens the rights to freedom of movement, association and expression and these constitutional protections must be respected,” he said while appealing to the people of Sindh to support the PTI campaign.

He said the PTI’s political struggle “is not centered on any individual but is aimed at ensuring Pakistan’s survival, constitutional supremacy, rule of law and welfare of the underprivileged.”

Referring to Imran Khan, the PTI leader described the former prime minister as “a symbol of Pakistan’s struggle for true freedom” and urged those who believe in constitutional supremacy, rule of law and democracy to join the party’s movement.

He also praised the organizational structure of PTI Sindh, saying provincial leaders and workers remained active and committed to safeguarding public rights. The party’s Sindh branch will continue to resist the “fascist system” while defending the democratic, constitutional and economic rights of the people, he added.
