President Trump to visit Cobb County school to discuss college economics and Republican candidates

COBB COUNTY, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – President Donald Trump will visit Wheeler High School in Cobb County on Wednesday.

While the White House says he will be there primarily to tout his new Trump Accounts — savings plans intended to help families pay for college — Trump will also likely use the stop as a sort of campaign event ahead of the November midterm elections.

Trump will be joined at the rally by Rep. Mike Collins, who is the GOP nominee to take on Sen. Jon Ossoff in the fall, and Rick Jackson, the Republican nominee for governor. Trump will most likely encourage voters to vote for him in the midterms.

Many Democratic lawmakers and political pundits were not enthusiastic about the idea of ​​Trump using a local high school as the setting for his rally, despite the theme of college savings.

“Cobb County is a Democratic-leaning county and Democrats are not excited about him coming,” said Alisha Thomas Searcy, a former Democratic representative in the Georgia House of Representatives and CEO of the Center for Strong Public Schools.

Searcy is also a resident of Cobb County.

“I’m actually disappointed that our superintendent of schools is involved in this,” she added. “I think it’s a way of politicizing education and schools, so it troubles me.”

Cobb County – once a Republican stronghold – has changed dramatically over the past decade. A series of new growth and demographic changes transformed Cobb into a predominantly Democratic voting base, with the party holding nearly all of the county’s major government seats.

“What’s changed is most of the growth in Cobb County is due to Democrats coming in,” said Jason Shepherd, former chairman of the Cobb County Republican Party. “Even though Cobb County is not a majority Republican county, we are competing with Gwinnett County – which is much larger – for the most Republican votes in the state. And these are votes that need to happen in November for the Republican ticket to win.”

Shepherd says the growth of Kennesaw State University, which had about 12,000 students when he was president but now enrolls more than 50,000, has contributed to this trend.

Shepherd isn’t concerned about Trump’s choice to visit a high school. He cites instances where former President George W. Bush visited Harrison High School in 2003 and then-candidate Barack Obama visited McEachern High School in 2008.

“The fact that three of the last four presidents have chosen Cobb County schools shows exactly where Cobb County schools stand in the national spotlight,” he said.
