Trump reportedly heading to Michigan as Gordie Howe Bridge opening takes place without joint ceremony – Michigan Advance

As the Canadian government plans to celebrate the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge on Friday — a ceremony that was supposed to be a joint effort with the Americans but was later canceled — President Donald Trump reportedly plans to visit Michigan on Monday to possibly support his candidates for the U.S. Senate and gubernatorial election.

Trump’s potential visit to Oakland County was first reported by The Associated Press on Tuesday, but no events have been confirmed or notices sent to media about a rally on Monday.

A message seeking comment from the White House Executive Office of the President was not returned at the time of publication. This story will be updated once a response is received.

Trump has endorsed both Republican U.S. Rep. John James of Shelby Township, who is seeking the nomination in the Aug. 4 gubernatorial primary, and former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers of White Lake, who is the only candidate on the Republican side of the U.S. Senate race.

Rogers will face either Abdul El-Sayed or U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens of Birmingham following the results of next month’s primary contest. A recent public poll gives Stevens a narrow lead, although the race remains competitive.

James will face businessman Perry Johnson in August, who is running a self-funded campaign to unseat James in the primary. He was not supported by Trump. If the president comes to visit Monday and looks for James, it will be the only Trump-sanctioned event in Michigan that week. Johnson is planning a tailgate event with some of his top surrogates on Monday, which he has called Trump Tailgate, but Trump’s team pushed back this week on social media, reiterating that the president did not support Johnson’s campaign.

Meanwhile, Monday will see the planned opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge on both sides of the span. Trump and Canadians are locked in a trade war over Trump-imposed tariffs, which began after Trump returned to office for a second term. The bridge’s opening was repeatedly delayed as Trump and the Canadians resolved their differences.

Part of this conflict involved the bridge financing agreement, which would allow Canada to collect tolls on the bridge to recoup the costs of building the new border crossing. The U.S. government refused to fund construction of the bridge, leading Canada to cover the initial costs as part of a financing agreement.

A breakthrough finally occurred and a new agreement on bridge tolls emerged in recent months, and a joint pre-opening ceremony was planned for Friday at the bridge.

But after Trump imposed new tariffs on Canada, plans for a joint ceremony were scuttled.

A Canada-only opening ceremony is still planned for Friday.

A spokesperson for the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority told the Michigan Advance that the bridge would open to traffic on Monday.
