US summons Malaysian envoy for Israel policy | Political news
Malaysia maintains no diplomatic relations with Israel and has anchored its position in the Palestinian cause.

The US State Department summoned Malaysia’s ambassador to the United States over his country’s long-standing policy towards Israel, the official Bernama news agency reported.
Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said Thursday evening that Ambassador Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob told the US State Department that Malaysia’s policy of not recognizing the State of Israel was not new.

“This has always been Malaysia’s policy. Our immigration policy does not recognize the State of Israel or the Zionist regime. This has been our position for a long time,” Bernama quoted Hasan as saying.
“There was an individual with dual American and Israeli citizenship who entered Malaysia using his American passport. However, subsequent checks revealed that he also held Israeli citizenship, and we asked him to leave.”
Malaysia has no diplomatic relations with Israel and has stressed its support for the Palestinian cause and against Israeli actions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
But the incident was sparked after the Network School, a community of “digital nomads” founded in the country by US investor Balaji Srinivasan, came under fire when social media users claimed it included participants from Israel.
An investigation into Network School followed and, although Malaysian authorities found that all participants had valid travel documents, the school was still closed on Tuesday.
Later, eight members of the US Congress sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressing outrage over Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s plan to track down all Israeli citizens in the country and immediately expel them.
However, on Wednesday, Ibrahim reiterated that Malaysia would continue to bar Israeli citizens from entering the country despite objections raised by members of the US Congress.
Anwar added that Malaysia was guided by its commitment to defending the rights of the Palestinian people and opposing the “continued oppression, aggression and massacres” of Palestinians in Gaza, Bernama reported.
“This will not deter us. They may make threats, but I will strongly defend the rights of the Malaysian people and uphold the government’s decision to continue to ban the entry of any Israeli national into Malaysia,” he added.
Members of the US Congress have urged the State Department to review its economic and security ties with Kuala Lumpur.
They demanded that funding for the International Military Education and Training Program, which provides U.S. professional training for Malaysian military personnel, be cut off unless the decision is reversed within 15 days.
