Trump was bombarded at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner – and proved his point

President Donald Trump bombed the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Friday night. He knew he was bombing too, and he even tried to make a joke out of it.

But no. Even the president’s jokes about his bad jokes fell flat, and he was subsequently widely ridiculed for his comedy routine.

Are members of the media laughing at the leader’s dismal performance live on television and online? In some other countries, this constitutes a criminal offense. But in the United States, that’s the norm, so perhaps Trump’s speech unintentionally underscored the theme of the dinner: America’s strong First Amendment protections.

In a rambling, hour-long speech, Trump insulted reporters by name, reused old nicknames for his political opponents, made an odd number of fat jokes that weren’t funny at all and seemed angry at his anonymous writers for giving him weak material to work with. “Does anyone understand this stuff?” he said at one point, and the answer was usually no.

Some of Trump’s remarks were “vicious,” as press secretary Karoline Leavitt promised. But more than anything, the speech was just…boring.

And Trump never wants to be boring. He claimed he was single-handedly keeping the news industry afloat, commenting: “When I’m gone, you’ll all be broke.” »

“No one cares about anyone else,” he said, before counting the number of stories on the front page of the New York Times that concerned him.

Trump’s lack of energy has led more than one TV executive to think the president has stumbled upon a new technique against the media: boosting ratings with a snoozefest.

Some attendees said they were surprised Trump didn’t bring more original material, given how highly anticipated the dinner was, in part because his attendance ended his years-long boycott of the White House Correspondents’ Association’s annual fundraiser.

Friday’s dinner was a smaller-scale revival of the April 26 black-tie affair that was postponed after a gunman tried to break into the ballroom of Washington’s Hilton hotel.

The recovery dinner was held across town, at the Waldorf Astoria, a building that Trump once operated as his namesake hotel in Washington — and an unofficial clubhouse for his first administration.

“See those beautiful chandeliers? I can tell you everything about them,” he threatened.

Trump did display some notes of unity, praising the Secret Service and denouncing political violence. “In this country we believe in freedom of speech,” he said. “We settle our differences not with bullets, but through open and vigorous debate. And no deranged loser with a gun will ever change that.”

He then joked about the diners wearing bulletproof vests under their fancy outfits, “which a lot of people didn’t want to wear because they’d rather die than look 20 pounds heavier.”

Trump’s remarks show how much he understands the power of the press — and that he gets angry when he can’t control it. He named several CNN journalists by name.

In response, CNN CEO Mark Thompson said in a statement: “We support our journalists and the integrity and impartiality with which the CNN team reports the news. Honest and accurate journalism can sometimes irritate politicians, but our right to report and present these stories to the public without government interference is fully protected by the U.S. Constitution. CNN will continue to exercise this right.”

Trump also praised media executives he considers allies, namely Larry and David Ellison, who took control of Paramount last year and are now trying to buy Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN. Paramount suffered a major setback earlier Friday when it agreed to accept a months-long delay in the merger while legal challenges were resolved.

Citing the fact that Paramount owns CBS News, Trump said David Ellison “is going to make, I think, fantastic changes and keep some of the good things going.”

Trump also made a convoluted joke about the controversial changes implemented by Ellison’s hand-picked CBS News editor Bari Weiss: “Under my administration, a once feared and powerful regime that relentlessly attacked America was finally toppled. Its former leaders were removed and they are now led by a gay dictator facing internal divisions. But I for one wish Bari Weiss all the best for CBS News. She’s a woman wonderful.”

Toward the end of the speech, the president donned a red “Trump 2028” hat. His choice of clothing seemed like deliberate trolling, given the outrage that erupts every time he talks about a constitutionally barred third term.

He also said he was just joking when talking about running again. Earlier in the evening, during a lengthy digression about his addition to the White House ballroom, he remarked that “I’m only going to use it for about six months” before leaving office, a rare acknowledgment that his term has an expiration date.

The more resentful and recycled Trump’s speech was, the more participants seemed to ignore him.

CNN’s Betsy Klein, who was in the room, said many people were on their phones or talking among themselves. Others ate macarons off the dessert trays, used the bathroom, or mingled in the lobby.

“The person at the table next to me just poured themselves a comically large glass of wine,” she observed nearly an hour later.

CNN’s Kristen Holmes said one of her Republican sources in the room told her: “Whoever wrote this speech should be fired.” »

But some of these jabs will surely circulate well on right-wing social media platforms, and Daniel Dale predicted that “the silence in the room will be presented by the president’s allies as proof that he roasted ‘fake news’ so much that they were stunned into submission.”

One of the most intriguing parts of the evening was the presentation of the Correspondents’ Association’s annual journalism awards. Trump won several awards, including one for “courage and responsibility” in reporting given to a team of Wall Street Journal journalists for their work investigating an obscene birthday letter addressed to Jeffrey Epstein bearing Trump’s name.

“Trump quickly filed a $20 billion lawsuit against the Journal, revealing the home address of journalist Khadeeja Safdar,” CNN’s Wolf Blitzer said at the award presentation.

Trump laughed and raised his hands in a shit-like gesture.

“His family had to be relocated,” Blitzer continued. “The Journal was started by Air Force One, but journalists continued to publish revealing stories.”

Trump then stood up and shook hands with each reporter. He is currently suing the Journal’s parent company over the investigation, and legal experts say he will most likely lose the case.

Outgoing White House Correspondents Association President Weijia Jiang introduced Trump after speaking about the importance of press freedom. Jiang wrote her remarks knowing that the president would sit next to her and listen.

Jiang said there was “an existential difference between criticizing the press and trying to undermine it. One is healthy and makes us all better. The other is exactly what the founders hoped to prevent.”

The CBS correspondent also addressed Trump directly: “When we ask questions, you push back. You give us answers, and we fight back. You’ve always been a believer in deals. Well, that’s the deal. And the First Amendment is a done deal. And that’s what we’re toasting to tonight.”
